• Tottenham Hotspur v Wigan Athletic Match History 2005-2012

Tottenham Hotspur host Wigan Athletic at White Hart Lane on Tuesday 31st January 2012 in a Matchday 23 Premier League game of the 2011-12 season.

Spurs come into the match in 3rd place in the Table with 46 points, while Wigan are bottom of the Table on 15 points.

This will be the 15th time the two teams have met since Wigan Athletic gained promotion to the Premier League in the 2005-06 season.

Wigan Athletic were formed in 1932 after the demise of Wigan Borough and they gained their Football League status in 1978.

The first meeting between the two clubs came at Wigan's ground in November 2005 and resulted in a 2-1 win for Spurs with goals from Robbie Keane and Edgar Davids. Wigan's goal was scored by Lee McCulloch late in the game.

The reverse fixture at White Hart Lane in February 2006 was a 2-2 draw with Tottenham's goals coming from Mido and Jermain Defoe and Wigan's from Andreas Johansson who had put the Lancashire club ahead twice.

Spurs also took four points off Wigan in the 2006-07 season with a 3-1 home win in November 2006 with goals from Jermain Defoe, Dimitar Berbatov and Aaron Lennon after Wigan's Henri Camara had put the Lattics ahead.

The points were shared in a 6-goal thriller at the JJB Stadium in April 2007 with a goal from Dimitar Berbatov and a Robbie Keane brace for Spurs while Emil Heskey, Leighton Baines and Paul Scharner were on the scoresheet for Wigan.

Tottenham Hotspur once again took four Premier League points off Wigan in the 2007-08 season with a 4-0 win at the Lane in November 2007. Jermaine Jenas scored twice and there were also goals for Aaron Lennon and Darren Bent.

Dimitar Berbatov scored for Spurs in the 1-1 draw at Wigan in April 2008 with Emil Heskey grabbing the equaliser.

The 2008-09 season saw Wigan take four points after a goalless draw at White Hart Lane and a 1-0 win in January 2009 thanks to Maynor Figueroa injury time winner.

Spurs beat Wigan in the FA Cup third round that season 3-1 with a brace of goals from Roman Pavlyuchenko and one from Luka Modric. Wigan's goal was scored by Henri Camara.

Maximum points were taken by Spurs in the 2009-10 season after a massive 9-1 home win in November 2009, which saw Jermain Defoe become only the third player after Alan Shearer and Andy Cole to score five goals in a Premier League match. There were also goals from Peter Crouch, Aaron Lennon, Niko Krajcar and David Bentley. Wigan's goal was scored by Paul Scharner. Amazingly enough, Spurs only led 1-0 at half-time and the eight goals scored in the second half by Spurs all came within 39 minutes.

Jermain Defoe's goal and a brace from Roman Pavlyuchenko saw Spurs to a 3-0 win at Wigan in February 2010.

Last season was another good one for Wigan, who took four points off Spurs. They won 1-0 at White Hart Lane in August 2010 with a second half goal from Hugo Rodallega. The match at the DW Stadium was goalless.

The reverse fixture earlier this season in September 2011 resulted in a 2-1 win from Spurs with goals from Rafael van der Vaart after just 3 minutes and Garerth Bale after 23 minutes. Wigan pulled a goal back through Mohamed Diame five minutes into the second half, but had Steve Gohouri sent off after receiving a second yellow card.

Overall, Spurs have won 7 of the 14 matches played so far with Wigan winning 2 and 5 matches drawn.

Fulham wouldn't be able to field a team against us!

Photo on the right - When did Torres sign for Wigan?

In the main photo, the Wigan defender chooses a peculiar time to practice his 110m, 6 inch Hurdles technique.

Torres for Wigan? Less a photo, more of a premonition?

        Poor old Erik Edman.
He was Wigan's left-back in the 9-1 game and he really didn't have a great day.

Scored a great goal for us against Liverpool at Klanfield, though:

He asked them to terminate his contract after that game. Our former left backs have a habit of this - Taricco did the same after tearing a hamstring on his West Ham debut.

I welcome Wigan's presence in the PL. 6 points per season is always handy.

I admire Dave Whelan's determination and ability to keep a club, who should be competing with Accrington, Stevenage, Burton, Morecambe and the like, in the PL for so long.

I'd take 1-0 to us now, Spurf

We got one off them last season. With the exception of Brum, the bottom five teams were like Kryptonite to us...

Despite the 9-1, Wigan can sometimes be a bit like Wolves to us - bit of a bogey team.

After the poor result against Wolves and then the loss to City (which would've hurt our players) - Wigan (on the face of it) seems like the perfect pick-me-up.

If we can go out there, play well in front of the home fans, score a few and get the win then it'll do our confidence the world of good ahead of our tough run of fixtures.

        From Tottenham's Facebook page:

        ---------------------

Good afternoon from Spurs Lodge! First team coach Joe Jordan has run through the team news ahead of tomorrow night's match against Wigan at the Lane. Joe reports that both Jermain Defoe and Aaron Lennon are doubtful with hamstring injuries picked up in Friday night's win against Watford. "We'll have to see how they settle down," said Joe. "They won't train with the squad today and we'll see how they are tomorrow."

I'll be glad to see the back of their rugby stadium if they go down. It's always in a right state this time of year, it's lucky we're at home.

I see Joe's carrying on Harry's classic tradition of 'doubtful hamstrings'. We must have the most doubtful hamstrings in England all collected on one wage bill.

aS WHEN hARRY COMES OUT WITH THE 'DOUBTFULS', VERY MUCH WAIT AND SEE i RECKON.

        apologies for caps lock

More team news from Spurs's facebook (don't blame me for the multiple posts - blame their page :P)

        ------------------

More team news...Gareth Bale trained today, Sandro also trained but Joe Jordan said he wasn't quite ready for a return to action. "His injury is clear but we have to build his fitness up now," said Joe. Ledley King could also be available to face Wigan.

According to one story, Rodallega will play for Wigan tonight, then sign for us immediately afterwards.

So which dressing room does he use when the game is finished?
