Panamanian defender Luis Moreno could get up to three months in prison for kicking an opposing team's lucky owl which was struck by a ball after landing on the field.
British national daily, The Guardian, reported that the injured owl kicked off the field by Moreno during a league match between Colombian football clubs has died.
A veterinarian, Camilo Tapia, said the owl went into shock on Wednesday, after having been taken in for treatment two days earlier.
It died in a local veterinary clinic in Barranquilla after Tapia was unable to save it.
On Monday, Feb 28, the owl landed, injured, near the corner of the pitch during a match between Atletico Junior and Deportivo Pereira. It was first struck by the ball near the Pereira penalty area.
Play was stopped.
Another British daily, The Telegraph, reported that as the referee and players discussed what to do Panamanian defender Luis Moreno - apparently impatient over the delay with his team losing 2-1 - was seen kicking the bird towards the touch-line with his left foot before Atletico Junior fans chanted "murderer" at him.
He had kicked the owl about three metres to get it off the field.
The New York Daily News reported that Morena claimed he had kicked the bird for its own well-being and quoted Moreno as saying, "it wasn't my intention to hit the animal. What I tried to do was wake it up so it could fly".
Humberto Mendoza, the director of the agency that oversees environmental issues in Barranquilla, has said he will investigate possible sanctions against Moreno.
