Seems like Celtic will be selling the top scorer over the last three seasons because a failing manager doesn't rate him.
Frankly the sale of McDonald would spell the end of my support for Mowbray. Some people don't rate the wee man, but I do. Sure he has a bad first touch sometimes and likes a moan a lot of the time, however he is deadly when it comes to big goals. This kind of ability cannot be bought for peanuts. Mowbray came to Celtic with the promise of good football and success. Now I never expected him to get it right straight away and was fully prepared to give him an entire season to do this. That time is over for me.
Celtic are no better off than we were 12 months ago under Strachan. We've signed a lot of unproven players who probably haven't even seen an SPL game whilst selling a good few players who thrived in the SPL, Hartley, Robson and Caldwell. Personally I didn't rate Caldwell but Robson and Hartley were "dig-in" players who knew how to defend a lead or keep on fighting until the final whistle.
The main problem under Strachan last season was an inability to find the net and if anything that problem has worsened not improved. According to "paper-talk" Mowbray is running the rule over Dindane, Kamara, Abdellaoue and McCormack. I would only take McCormack out of those players at this minute and I certainly wouldn't sell Skippy to fund this move. Anthony Stokes is a proven SPL striker and that is exactly what Celtic need right now; someone who can get SPL goals. Never mind building a team, get the title won. I'm not saying Stokes is a "must sign" player but all these other guys (With the exception of McCormack) are unknown quantities in Scotland.
At the end of the day the title was there for the taking this season if Mowbray had rallied the squad in July and had fully prepared himself to for such a high profile job. Media fall-outs, talk of disharmony, sending your ridiculously under-qualified assistant to press conferences and alienating the big personalities in the dressing-room.
Selling the teams best finisher to sign unknown quantities is a massive and truly nonsensical gamble at this stage in an already bad season and in my opinion shows that Mowbray has failed already.
