As I remember, the Spiders were not accorded owt like the recognition the Housemartins got, despite being several million times better. Look North and Calendar were done from Leeds, HDM was written by pensioners for Terry and June. Rock/pop then was seen as teenage froth, not really worthy of MSM coverage.
You'd have a hard job finding punks in the early 70's. The 4" Be 2" were appalling. By 77 there were plenty of 'Clash loving turds' at City.
Went to Bristol Rovers late 1977,majority of there younger fans were punks, not surprisingly not many punks at Bristol City
I was one of them. No not 'One of Them'; one of them. That was another 70s thing, casual homophobia as a default. Add that to casual racism and casual sexism. The decade of the intolerant ****s.
Don't recall that many punks at City in the 70's,a few from Anlaby/Kirkella/Willerby and some skin/punk types off Boothferry who turned casual early on,the trouble vetween the 2 groups led to most of the Anlaby etc punks to stop going.
Gigs at Leeds queens hall, coming back on the train at three in a morning. So hanging round Leeds from half ten.
We are Devo. Football hooliganism at The Damned gig at City Hall with Boro, Dills mohican, Newland, Rat and Cunny, City punks and casuals did mix before it all went Toty's mob never run.
You could count the number of City fans in drainpipe jeans in 1977 on the fingers of one hand. It was Lionel Blairs or baggies for most people, centre partings and feather cuts. Popular acts were the Stranglers who appealed to the trendier normals. BWFC came in September that year, and turned up in combat pants, unlike SAFC the game before who were still in big flapping jeans and bar scarves.
An era of rapid sartorial change on the terraces, much copying, the north often ahead of the south, seems like one minute you could be boarding a double decker in a donkey jacket and boots on your feet humming Into The Valley by The Skids, the next minute you'd find yourself in a pringle jumper on a Good News Travels coach with no one in City colours. Now people dress exactly the same for 2 decades.
People wearing Lacoste, Fila etc now just as they were in early 80s. That's approx 35 years ago. Imagine people in early 80s wearing gear from the mid 40s!
Jesus wept, you'd gave to factor in an extra 10 mins to get them on each time you went out in them. And again when you came home.
