Thanks. They were next door but one, rough diamonds, but absolutely sound; really good to hear that the family is going strong.

Hessle Rd was never refined, but it was a bloody wonderful place to grow up; between the rivalries of the Trawlermen (my dad), the Bobbers and the Tatters, it made for some interesting times. Add into that the Gallagher family (Bingo Hall - Billy was a schoolmate up to 11+) and Mike Wolfe, the first black kid on the Road, and Life really was a box of chocolates.

In the Sunday Times Culture mag today they send Bryan Appleyard up here to give us the once over. He's no spring chicken and isn't the usual gushing snowflake **** or metrosexual snooty turd whose views are worthless.
He's a time served critic with an open mind. Like many people, he has never been here, admits as much.

To cut a long story short he is won over (despite meeting Sheffield's Matt Stephenson), and identifies our spectacular city scape (Humber/ Hull confluence) and views. He also recognises the subtle identity, humour and mindset of our city. Larkin and Hull was a perfect fit. He correctly recognises that Liverpool is open to the world whereas we ain't, Manchester is often full of hot air (even if it has achieved mighty things), that the trains slow down at Donny, that the motorway peters out at Goole and that we have to time for blowing our own trumpet (or those who do).

Great stuff. Let's just hope it gets the respect that it deserves and it doesn't become a graffiti or vandalism target. The faces on the last picture says everything.

Work's just started on the second phase of Holy Trinity's £4.5m renovation (seems an odd time to start doing it)...

I'm pleased with the C.O.C. thing up to now, those people in charge of bringing Hull to life have done a good job up to now, from the opening light show to the blade now on display, lets hope that they can keep up the momentum. But I am looking beyond 2017 and how do we keep up the attention that Hull has been receiving these last few weeks, a lot of it positive. We need to keep certain things visible, and I don't mean The Deep, Marina and stuff but how about keeping the light show periodically, and I think the blade shoule remain in place for the full year. We have the replica of Amy's plane hanging from the roof Paragon Station, sorry the Interchange but there were other planes that could have been used. The Buccaneer had a lot of links with Hull people, but nothing to show that was so, and I remember a plane parked outside of the old pain factoy on Hedon Road a few years ago, where is that? Could it be found and cleaned up after being vandalised, these could be permanent showpieces, we have museums with the whaling and fishing industries but nothing from manufacturing. Priestmans, did it exist? Shipbuilding, J. Arthur Rank, but we have a statue to a librarian who wasn't even born in Hull, as good as he may have been. Housemartins, The Beautiful South, maybe something about Spiders From Mars may surface and maybe something will turn up in the months to come. Oh and bring the Artic Corsair into the under used Princes Dock where many more people will see it.

    Amy's plane (although a replica)

And a plane that was left to rot more or less and could be a great addition for a display.

I believe that Dave Hemingway, Hugh Whitaker, Stan Cullimore, Dave Rotheray were Mauled but correct me if I'm wrong.
