It's not about being 'ahead' of Defoe. In all honesty, it's more than he's 34 and hasn't been picked for England since 2013. Personally I think he should have been in the squad since he started knocking in the goals for Sunderland. It's just that we get told that we're building for the future and he brings back Defoe and includes Livermore. It's just laughable.

I'd have liked to have seen Gray get a chance, not that it matters though as they won't get any minutes.

Defoe isn't actually in form. 2 goals in his last 7 games.

He wouldn't have had a look in if Kane and Rooney were fit.

And the 3 players I mentioned earlier are all better all-round players.

I think Defoe is a temporary fix as if there weren't so many injuries, he wouldn't be in the squad. Do you really think Andre Gray is the future of English strikers?

I understand where you're coming from and agree with your premise but the fact of the matter is that we don't have too many good English forwards. We could just promote the best from the youth squads but what's the point? It's better to keep them in their age groups and call up the experienced Defoe for a couple of games.

I'd agree with you if two of them weren't injured/returning from injuries.

He did actually say "in their right minds" so I think he may have meant to exclude Southgate.

Defoe has 14 goals this season. That's pretty unbelievable when he's playing for the worst side in the League. He should have been in the last god knows how many squads but he wasn't. On this season's form, neither Vardy or Rooney should be in the squad.

Realistically Gray isn't the future of English strikers but we're already well covered for the next decade or so with Kane & Rashford. We're just looking for back ups now really. 8 in 20 starts is quite impressive for his first year in the PL.

Also an argument that Carroll & or Deeney should have been in there.

All of this just serves to show where we are at international level. England are years away from winning anything. So far away I tend to not even think about it. Livermore ffs...

    Totally agree.
The lack of talent is an embarrassment with the amount of money pouring in

And still not got him signed up, or have I missed it?! Beggars belief, absolute utter madness.

Brilliant for Tymon though, what an opportunity and experience.

Edit: Although there was a pic of him with his first motor, a gleaming new Beamer, so he can't be on £160 a week as has been rumoured on here.
