Why do Americans say "I could care less" insteand of "I couldn't care less"? What they say is exactly the opposite of what they mean. If you could care less then you do care.

A a kid when I wasn't been honest or fair my dad used to say "come on play the white man" its only now when i look back I realise how bad that was. He wasnt racist, I think it was just a saying that he grew up with that he used without even thinking of its meaning

It has no proper origin either apart from that it should obviously be 'I couldn't care less'. Some people think it's just mishearing the original phrase or that it used to be 'as if I could care less' but its been shortened. Whatever the reason it's as daft as a brush.
