I don't either. I only know the the thing because I read it looking for something else.

Don't tell anyone though, it's our secret. :emoticon-0105-wink:

I ****ed up the quote thingy, not the 'the' thingy.

Many learned fellows have (and continue to) use 'the' before Magna Carta. I'm yet to see a decisive argument against using 'the', but I'd certainly be willing to receive further input on the subject. Again, I prefer it without the 'the', yet I can't really say why.

From memory, it's because it's in Latin, which has no definite article.

    EDIT

    Usage notes[edit]
When referring to the original Magna Carta, many (though not all) usage guides advise omitting the word the before Magna Carta for two reasons: first, as the term is a proper noun; and secondly, because in Latin the term did not take an article, and early anglicizations of the term followed this pattern.[2]

As I have already said, I would like to know more about not using "the". I am genuinely curious.

My mum used to work for Collins and Chambers and her very best friend's husband was pretty much 3rd in command at Collins. I will ask her to ask him tomorrow.

Are youbreally quoting something that says "anglicizations"?

It certainly looks that way, but maybe I'm being obtuse.

I know it should be Anglicisaxons.

Being obtuse is a great quote from Shawshank, but, anyway, as a rule of thumb, anything with a "z" as opposed to an "s" is the Yank way of spelling it. Surely you meant to say, "anglicisations"?

As previously stated, I prefer it without the 'the' (I'm quite a traditional sort of bloke), and I fully understand the arguments for removing the 'the', but I'm also of the belief that our language has evolved to the point where we can use the definite article with some proper nouns, be they Latin or otherwise.

With regard to Magna Carta, I think it's a matter of personal style nowadays.

RIP Austin Mitchell, former Labour MP for Great Grimsby <peacedove>

I cannot say that I ever met the man but my late grandmother spoke to him quite regularly as he lived in an adjacent street when he was the town’s MP; although I am sure she did not have any influence on his politics.

An illustration in a time of disdain about politicians of how there are some MPs with integrity who will represent those that elected them even if that goes against the Party wishes.

Of course he will probably be best remembered for his previous career as a presenter on the Yorkshire Television regional news programme Calendar, particularly for this special interview after Leeds United sacked Brian Clough:

Your stepmother must be brain dead stupid but clearly you cannot have inherited that condition but just developed it yourself.

Her bank does not control how she pays her bills to any organisation. If an organisation accepts cash for paying bills then that is beyond the control of her bank. I will bet you £10,000 that all landlines will not be terminated by 2025. Obviously you will have to give the money to a charity of my choice because I will be dead before 1 January 2023. <laugh>

I didn't agree with some of his views, but he always seemed to be a genuine bloke, doing his best for his constituents no matter what the party line was. There's many politicians that would do well to learn from his example.

As a teenager, I used to wear a waistcoat emblazoned with totem poles.

Let that sink in for a moment.
