If you have a spare few minutes(at least sixty of them), here's the 97 page Public Realm Strategy for Hull City Centre...

http://www.hullcc.gov.uk/pls/portal/docs/PAGE/HOME/COUNCIL GOVERNMENT AND DEMOCRACY/ABOUT HULL CITY COUNCIL/COUNCIL POLICIES AND PLANS/PUBLIC REALM INVESTMENT STRATEGY/PUBLICREALMINVESTMENTSTRATEGY_UPDATEDFINAL.PDF

There's a lot of very good suggestions in here, it remains to be seen how much of it's actually implemented, but it would make a massive difference to the city centre if it was. Even if you can't be arsed to read it all, it's worth looking at the graphics of the new look King Edward Street and the top end of Whitefriargate.

Very good, the plans rank up there with the new series of TFI starting this Friday

Well it's taken me all day (between work haha) it looks brilliant, it should be called City CENTRE of Culture though

There's some brilliant ideas in there, sadly I doubt most of them will be realised, things like moving the Wilberforce statue(which will apparently cost nearly £2m) are unlikely to happen.

I actually think that most of this WILL happen. It's so important for the presentation of the City to the hundreds of thousands of visitors, that will come during the C of C.
I am pretty sure that moving the momument will not happen though, and I for one, am glad about that. To me, it is in the absolute perfect place right now and moving it will be wasteful in cash and time, when there is so much else to do. Once Queens Gardens are opened up and the monument cleaned and lit up properly with modern lighting, it will look magnificent.

One aspect, amongst many, of the plans that I like, is the stepped area down to Prince's Dock. This will be a wonderful, south facing sun trap, in the summer. This will allow everyone to enjoy the fountains and waters edge, without feeling that they have to buy a coffee.

I really like that, but I fear that is the one most likely not to happen, as I think the cost will outweigh the benefit(there's nothing there now, the whole thing would have to be built from scratch).

I think it's just a one-off anniversary show. Not a full new series.

Not sure it will be that difficult, the steps are made of timber I think. The dock wall is already there on one side, and the other side just needs some kind of cladded wall up to the shopping centre walkway.

There's nothing there at the moment, you'd have to build a platform at water level, before worrying about the steps and walls...

I thought that moving the statue back to it's original position was high up on the list as I'm sure they were planning on doing it before CoC was announced

A lot of the other stuff is very 'tried and trusted' but the main part is that it will spruce up the dated public realm in the city centre and freshen the place up and modernise the streets.

I'd have liked to have seen a few more 'outside the box' ideas, but I think what has been proposed will look great.

I'm not a fan of its current location - it's an impressive monument which should be better utilised, but is instead stuck in front of a dated 60s college block, off the beaten track in regards to the main tourist routes.

They've already said the monument is unlikely as the cost of moving it was far higher than expected I believe

There's certainly a lot that needs doing. I'm proud of being from the area. However a recent visit into the city centre left me feeling depressed. Loads of empty shops - 3 indoor shopping centres, which if we're all honest are absolutely dire. Empty shops or discount shops in the Quay and Prospect. Then St Stephens which is just piss poor. I have no idea what the City planners were thinking in approving this? All it has done is spread commerce right across the city. Rather than have one decent focus - we now have 3 half arsed efforts. None of the centres have got genuine flagship stores, it's a mess really. I hope they do a better job on the City of Culture. TWT.

The original plan with the Prospect Centre extension, was that the retail units were continued right onto Jameson Street(where the Mail buildings were demolished) and that Hammonds would be incorporated into the centre as the flagship tennant. I have no idea what went wrong, or how we ended up with the extension mainly being a car park, but it would have made far more sense if it had gone ahead as planned.

Public realm. How many had come across that description until recently. Now it is everywhere. Same with night time economy. Trying to remember if I was enticed to visit Amsterdam, Barcelona, Hamburg etc to enjoy their public realm and sample the delights of their night time economy.

Went to York last week and had to come to Hull for family reasons. York full of groups of tourists, predominantly young and including a lot of attractive females, who obviously hadn't read Geraghty informing people Hull was a better place to visit, everywhere there were people sat outside enjoying drinks and something to eat. A large choice of proper old pubs to go into and numerous eating places. Didn't see much of Hull but it isn't impressive for anyone coming out of the train and bus station, sorry, interchange. Left the wife to do some shopping and sat in the wind tunnel known as St Stephens. The wife returned disappointed at the state of things and surprised at how few people were actually doing anything where all the barriers and cones were.
I hope things go well next year but won't be surprised if it is a bit of a let down.
