They made an effort to cut payroll this year. It shows.
They didn't even put in a bid to retain Jose Reyes this past offseason.

The owners are pinched because of the Bernard Madoff financial scandal.
They had to divest huge profits back to the Madoff bankruptcy Trustee.

Not prepared to invest any money, especially in their pitching. Letting Dickey go was bizarre, he'd get at least 15 wins. Owners need to sell for Mets to be strong again.

The Dickey deal is going to be good for the Mets. Pretty good start by John Buck, their new starting catcher until the really good prospect they got in the Dickey trade, Travis d'Arnaud, is ready to start. It is the first step in the new philosophy.

The Mets are now committed to developing the farm system. They are promoting from within, rather than bringing in overpaid, underperforming players. At least they won't overpay the underperforming players again!

Los Mets now have two kick-ass pitchers in Zach Wheeler and Matt Harvey.
    Both are rookies.
    Kick-ass, shutdown, ace material.

Matt Harvey- Yes. Already an ace and will be annual Cy Young contender.
Zack Wheeler- No. Not even close to Harvey's level right now, and I don't think he ever will be. Could be a really good #2, though. That's nothing to sneeze at.

That's a great pair of SP to have, plus Noah Syndegaard maybe just a year or two away. The rotation looks hugely promising. Unfortunately they have no offense. Travis D'Arnaud should be a big boon. Cesar Puello if he gets by the PED scandal. Flores might be average. And that's about it.

They still have a ton of work to do to build a contender, but it does look like they might finally be heading in the right direction at least.

I'm updating this thread because as a life-long NY Mets fan, I need to say this while I can:
The Amazin' Mets are in first place in the NL East...by two games after winning their last six games.
    That is all.

The Mets have a "magic number" to clinch the NL East. After sweeping a home and home series with the Washington Nationals (6 games) AND the easier scheduled going forward, the Amazins might actually do it this year.

They did some Amazin' business at the trade deadline (very unlike the Mets) and brought in some huge bats to go with the great pitching they already had. The farm system has been coughing up great young pitchers over the last two years.

The 2015 NL East Champion New York Metropollitans...I like the sound of that.
Makes all the waiting and past promises from the organization seem palatable.

Yeah, they had a good season. Finally got some hitting to go with that great young rotation. I'm a little bitter my Cubs also finally had a great season but are getting screwed by this silly WC system.

Would love to see a Cubs-Mets NLCS. That's a good old school NL East rivalry.

I remember 1969 when the Cubs led the NL East (old configuration) and looked like they were going to the NL Championship series. The Mets got their "Amazin'" moniker that year when they caught the Cubs after being left for dead in last place in the East, then finished first, knocked off Henry Aaron and the Atlanta Braves in the NL Championship series and then the heavily favored Baltimore Orioles in the World Series..

Some superstitious fans attribute the Cubs collapse to an incident at Shea Stadium: A black cat walked behind the Cubs on-deck circle where captain Ron Santo was standing. There is an iconic photo of Cubs Manager Leo Durocher staring at the black cat from the dugout.

The Cubs keep look like they are going to go long into the postseason. From Wikipedia: The following teams have won the World Series as a wild card team: Marlins (1997 and 2003), Angels (2002), Red Sox (2004), Cardinals (2011) and Giants (2014),

Yeah, the Miracle Mets started a minor rift in my family that still exists to this day.

My dad and my uncle used to go to the games. But in '69 my dad started bringing my infant sister who apparently cried the whole time so finally my dad stopped going in the second half of the season.

From that point on, my uncle EVERY SINGLE TIME he ever sees my sister cracks a joke about how she made the Cubs lose. Except that it's been like 45 years now so while I think he honestly believes he's joking... I also believe that somewhere subconsciously he also genuinely believes it. For this reason, my sister has never really liked my uncle, the Cubs or baseball.

Granted my sister is not into sports, or Chicago in general. And my uncle is an odd duck who rubs a lot of people the wrong way. So it's definitely not just that. But it's part of it.

My dad has always blamed Dorucher for overusing all his starters. He says the Cubs just ran out of gas. Me? I think the Mets won like 40 out of their last 50 games so it was less Cubs collapsing than the Mets just going on an epic tear. I mean, they won the WS so it's not like anyone else could beat them either.

A couple of years later, I was born and my dad took me to games at Wrigley all throughout the 70's. And I loved it. Didn't seem to do anything to stop the Cubs from sucking though. Now my dad lives in Washington and oddly enough has become a diehard Nationals fan, so he is taking the Mets comeback this year kind of hard. He feels like he got done twice.

I've always kind of liked the Mets, though. I always wanted the Cubs to beat the Mets back in the NL East of course, but it often didn't matter that much because both teams were bad quite a few of those years. What I wanted more was for the Mets (and everyone else in the world) to beat the Cardinals. So I have a bit of a soft spot for them from the old NL East days via "enemy of my enemy is a friend of mine."

Anyway, I think the concern with the Mets is how much Harvey, De Grom, and Syndergaard have left in the tank. If they pitch as well as they are capable, the Mets can easily win the whole thing. But who knows? The playoffs are always somewhat of a crapshoot.

There has been an evolution of sorts in how managers handle starting pitching. Today, the only reason that a starter gets into the eighth or ninth innings is if they are chasing a no-hitter or haven't hit 90 pitches. Complete games are a rarity now.

Matt Harvey (and his agent) actually set an innings limit for the regular season. He is still recovering from Tommy John surgery, I guess The Mets starters were rested over the last month with a five or six man starting rotation, some pitchers skipping starts with almost two weeks rest. I think that started when they passed the Nationals and opened up a five or six game lead in the Division. The quality of the starting pitching won't be a problem for that reason. Facing REALLY GOOD hitting in the playoffs might.

The Chicago Cubs fans deserve a lot of respect for supporting their team through all their heartbreaks over the years. This year's NL Championship Series came down to Mets pitching shutting down Cubs hitting.

I was watching MLB Network this morning. It was speculated that the Cubs might have SIX position players, who will play every game next year, that each might bat .300 and knock in 20 home runs. The Cubs need a pitching upgrade and if they get it, should be in contention for many years to come.

The reigning NL Champion Mets made it to the playoffs again, for one Wild Card game, and lost to the San Francisco Giants.
Another Amazin' season considering half their starting pitchers went down with injuries and they lost two regular field players for the season.
