Because Bates vetoed it. Grayson said as much on the radio last night.

His agent told the Mail it was because Leeds weren't an ambitious enough club. No doubt because Ipswich were actively strengthening their squad with signings of intent at that time and we weren't.

Nolan went West Ham at the start of the year, and I reckon that if Sam Allardyce was our manager he woulda come here
And we would have paid their wages under Bates, would we? Bates who today said that a defensive signing worth 11.5k a week was too much? Bates who has us on the same budget we were on in League One for wages? You're being short-sighted and refusing to see past the Bates-created obvious target of the manager. Strike the problem at the ROOT, not the BRANCH.

Thats why its the managers fault because he brings them in, if we don't bring in these **** ****s then we get to have a good team but no we spend money on these players. If we had that extra 45k a week wages or over 2mil in transfers then we would easily be able to afford lets say andrews, st. ledger and buy keogh which would be our squad set. Then we don't bring in the ridiculously **** O'Dear and bring in a different 'good' loan player instead as well
Because we've got a Bates-imposed wage limit of 11k a week according to Richard Sutcliffe and Gwyn Williams (via Duncan Castles), so we can't afford highly-paid players. That's why Grayson's been forced to go for quantity over quality. That, and the need to rotate the squad more, which I supported him in.

Schmeichal was on 15k a week last season as was AOB.

I'm not entirely sure i trust Duncan Castles in this instance because I think its more to do with an overall wage budget rather than a player' individual wage cap. Im still right in saying that if we didn't have all the dead wood (that grayson signed) then we would be able to afford better players. Also i dont think players want to come to the because of grayson, if you were picking a club entirely on a manager who would you pick
    a) Simon Grayson
    b) Sam Allardyce
    c) Nigel Adkins
Simon grayson would be last on my list

That's what Castles and Sutcliffe both said - Castles is the mouthpiece for Gwyn Williams who is a reliable source, and Sutcliffe is the YP's chief football writer so obviously isn't going to make this sort of thing up.

Obviously there are better managers in the world than Grayson, but he's still a hero in my eyes and did an excellent job with seriously **** resources. Yeah, he signed dead wood, but even if he'd freed up some space on the wage bill, he still didn't have the persuasive powers to bring players into the club who were looking for an ambitious outfit to join. Why? Because Bates has sucked all the ambition from us with his negotiation errors, player sales and inept chairmanship.

    ONE SIMON GRAYSON
    BATES OUT

Simon Grayson has said many time in interviews (when we were selling schmeichal) that he was on the biggest wages. We also offered AOB decent wages and he went to cardiff and got offered more so we matched it (sounds like a deal GAME would do). Although AOB's wages went down this season i believe

I can look for proof if you want, cant really be bothered right now but i am certain of it.

If we got rid of the dead wood though and started offering more money (because we would be able to) then we can bring in a quality player which shows ambition which would roll in more quality players. Its a cycle thats hard to get into but certainly possible

I trust the club's Technical Director and the chief football writer of a reliable broadsheet paper close to the club more than supposition.

It would have been if we had A) enough to sign more than one quality player and B) a free wage structure without constraints.

As it is, I doubt we had either of those things in good supply, and to sacrifice quantity for quality is a mistake, just as it was vice-versa last season when we didn't rotate enough. You need BOTH to get promoted. It's just that Grayson wasn't given enough financial backing to get lots of good players, because that costs lots of money!

I’m extremely concern about the club now. We have sold a lot of good players and got nothing in.
I think the club is falling apart and would not be surprised if Bristol put 5 pass us.
I hope not, but I think we will struggle for the rest of the season.
We probably end up just above the relegation zone if we are lucky.

You're looking too short term. Any deadwood we have is practically impossible to get rid of because of wage demands and contract length. No one will pay a fee for our deadwood because it's exactly that, deadwood. If they were good enough to be worthy of a transfer fee we wouldn't have gotten them in the first place.

Why did we get them? You put the blame on Grayson, I say he was forced into getting whoever was available and had to offer whatever wages he could, and in many cases a stupidly long contract just to get hold of these players because his hands were tied. Then when an opportunity comes around to get a decent player for a reasonable sum, like the one he was refused last week, he's told by the chairman that he can't because he has enough centre backs already, that he can't get rid of for the aforementioned reasons. Then when the blame gets fired at Bates, who is the root cause of the problem, he has plausible deniability in that the players we have that meant the signing wasn't viable were signed by Grayson. Signed by Grayson because he couldn't get anyone better. Darren O'Dea was signed because we couldn't get anyone better, I have no doubt of that. The proof is in the fact that he's a Celtic reject and we have him on loan rather than a permanent. If we could have "afforded" to get him on a permanent we could have gotten someone much better.

It starts with Bates putting unreasonable constraints on Grayson which seem reasonable at first, then he gets trapped in a cycle of "I need players so I'll get whoevers available to paper over the cracks until someone better becomes available. Right, someone better is available, I'll try get him. Wait a minute, I can't because my crooked boss won't let me until I get rid of the deadwood that I can't get rid of because desperation made me sign them on terms that mean no one is interested in them. ****. ****."

It absolutely astonishes me how blind you are to the big picture. Bates cannot be trusted, he has set up this massive puppet show and pulled all the strings, set everything into place so he can manipulate it in any way he wants to give himself plausible deniability and be accountable for nothing and you're absolutely eating it all up.

The fact that he has not fulfilled a single one of the promises he made when he first took charge of the club is proof enough that he is playing us all for mugs, how can you not see it?
