In this, the 200th Dickens Anniversary year, I have never read any of his novels. I never had the chance in school having studied Shakespeare. I have seen TV and film adaptions and I have been in school plays based on Dickens stories but I have never read the books.

Have any of you people read much? What did you enjoy most?

Any book which is over 100 years old (I think), you can get for free on a kindle or iphone.

I've read a few Dickens books - the wife has read the lot.

If you like politics, start with A Tale of Two Cities (my favourite).

If you like an everyman you can support, start with Nicholas Nickleby.

Our Mutual Friend, The Olde Curiosity Shoppe and Edwin Drood are probably the most challenging and the ones to avoid for your first Dickens book.

If you like a wholesome central character surrounded by relative malice, go for Little Dorrit.

If you're a mongo, support Rangers

I got her a Kindle at xmas and think I can remember reading that any book pre-1923 (or any book that has passed into the public domain) you can get for free.

Might be wrong, though. My memory has been known to tell me lies.

Anyone else see the title of this thread and expect to hear a tale or two about Sams homoerotic thoughts?
