We all come across horses that we try to remember to follow and, certainly in my case, often seem to forget to keep an eye our for them. As a result I thought I'd put together a thread that we can all put a marker on for horses we want to keep an eye out for. I will start with a horse that, after months of waiting, finally has an entry to run this weekend. If someone would be kind enough to put it up on the Daily Thread on Saturday (as I am away for a few days) I'd appreciate it. 4.15pm Redcar (Saturday 6th October) – FIRST MOHICAN I don’t know what price he will go off, but I’ve been waiting for him to come out for ages. I met his owner some months ago and he told me about this horse. As a 2yo he worked with an unraced Frankel and reportedly kept pace with him. Sir Henry telephoned the owner to say “I think you might have something special here”. He had a few niggles hence only making a back-end appearance in 2010 where he duly obliged by 2 lengths. He’s been kept off the racecourse since his debut due to knee problems, but they have persevered with him and within the last few weeks he has been subbing for Bullet Train as Frankel’s lead horse on a few occasions. Whilst I am in no way suggesting that he is worthy to kiss Frankel’s hooves, he is certainly an interesting runner and may be worth an each-way bet if the odds are favourable. Progress Summary PN Change this to however you prefer to summarise things, or remove it, however you see fit. 6Oct12 4:15pm Redcar W 7/4 See how he ran 17Oct12 3:15 Nottingham W 7/4 See how he ran 10Nov12 2:35 Doncaster, Betfred November Handicap
Forecast to be 4/1 favourite. Any Sir Henry Cecil winning newcomer catches my eyes as he doesn't have too many of them anymore and normally leaves them with work to do so that angle plus your words are very, very interesting. Also has another entry for Wednesday so could be going for a quick double. Cheers for the heads ups Princess.
Hey PN, great info, many thanks. Missed the 7/2 but grabbed some 5/2, excellent info and very much appreciated
Nice info PN, won as it liked once Queally asked it to quicken and if it settles better in future no doubt alot more improvement to come, looks a decent horse and is sure to progress and win better races. I see it's declared for Nottingham on Wednesday, are the owners expecting it to win again there?
I don't know what the intentions are with him, but they're certainly very keen on him. Whether they are trying to get a few more runs into him before his handicap mark becomes too prohibitive, I don't know. My suspicions would be that they are trying to give him more racecourse experience before stepping him up in class
Princess, excellent advice on First Mohican. I note though that he's owned by Mr WH Ponsonby. Is this the Henry Ponsonby who has horses with Mr Henderson and organises a few syndicates??? If so what do you think are the chances of First Mohican joining Mr Henderson and being campaigned over timber this winter???
Quite possible, being a gelding. With that class would it be ridiculous to think of him as a possible Champion Hurdle candidate for 2014?
Just noticed this thread and I've been lookig for news for Saturday about this horse PN - an acquaintance in the pub told me about it as his uncle has connections with another yard and he speaks to Sir Henry now and again. He said he is very sweet on this horse and said the only thing that will beat him is less than ideal (i.e soft) ground. Obviously even a man like Sir henry gets it wrong now and again but it's extremely interesting!
Dan - not sure I read your post right, the horse needs soft ground and should get it. He's been upped 12lb for his Nottingham win and having watched that race I think that's fair, his 8lb rise for his win at Redcar earlier was incredible, I felt he had so much more in hand that day as was proved at Nottingham. Now rated 100 he'll be giving weight away to some decent animals but I can't desert the horse and PN did tell us weeks ago that he was rated along the same lines as Frankel as a 2yo and looks to have the class to win in group company...
I think there is still more to come from First Mohican and he has been going away in both his wins this Autumn. The big thing about his winns so far is that he has not been run at his distance yet which he will get for the first time this Saturday as 10f has looked short of his best, I think he will win and then take a group race next year. I have made a little profit thanks to Princess putting us onto this horse already and was going to invest it in the November Handicap but with all this said i think 5-1 is very short and had hoped for 8's or 10's. I will back him however as he is our horse now i feel, thanks again Princess. Thanks Princess, will be backing it again definatly after it's gone 2 out of 2 since you put it up. Good work
