Watched Premier Soccer Saturday last night and my favourite pundit of them all, John Giles, described our performance as "the best defensive display he's seen in England all season". Most of you would never hear Giles but he's very hard to please when it comes to analysing good performances so I sat up and took note when he said that last night.

When you consider the utter shambles of the Liverpool game, it is a most extraordinary turnaround from a purely defensive point of view.

Whatever about the Cup game, we'll face an entirely different challenge at West Ham next week. They showed earlier in the season that if you surrender midfield to them, they'll roll over you. So I wouldn't be surprised to see Harry go with 5 in the middle again and try and nick something on the counter. Hill and Nelson should be able to deal with their inevitable aerial bombardment so that should free one player right in front of them (Derry/Park/Faurlin) to push up a bit and help start some attacking moves. One things for sure, we have to be a bit more attack minded than we were against Spurs because this really is a game we have to win. City are up after that and we'd be lucky to get a point from them so we've got to beat ze 'Ammers.

Imo John Giles is one of the worst pundits I've ever watched along with that other twat Eamon Dunphy!! A right pair of bellends!

rrrrs, are you on the wind up? Forget about Dunphy, he just wants to be controversial. But how can you say Giles is a bad pundit? You've obviously not watched him and are just having a joke.

With the greatest of respect and at the risk of opening myself up to attack, but I honestly believe that the punditry you guys are served up that side of the water is abysmal. With one or two notable exceptions (Neville and Savage), the analysts on British TV are appalling. They never disagree with each other and they just trot out the same old tired cliches week after week.

Could it be that your aversion to his analysis stems from a time when you might have seen him giving an honest appraisal of the English national team?

I've had the misfortune to watch those twats on many occasions and have to say I think they're abysmal. Even Graham Souness won't go back on because they talk so much crap.
It's only my opinion swords, I'm sure there are millions who'd disagree with me.

It's all about opinions Swords, some may agree with you, many may not. The few times I've seen Giles and the occasional radio interview I've heard he strikes me as being 'old school' and his views on the game are a bit dated. I wouldn't say he's someone I'd take a lot of notice of. Tony Cascarino is someone I've come to consider an excellent analytical journalist and reckon he'd make a first rate pundit...

How do you know Souness has refused to go back on there? Maybe he's not been asked? Maybe he's getting a lot more money from Sky?

I can't see how you could come to that conclusion on RTE's punditry. The only thing I can think of is that you've been served up so much dross over the years that you've been dumbed down to the truth. If Oddball was here he's set you straight!

Now I know you're on the wind up! <laugh>

    IT'S MY OPINION swords!!
Why do you have to try and start a fight when someone doesn't agree with you!!
Ps. Souness was quoted in The Irish Times

What did he actually say? Maybe you're right. Maybe he can't stand the heat. Maybe he's not as tough as we thought.

I would ask the English boys one question and one question alone, the answer to which will go a long way to illuminating the quality and robustness (or lack thereof) of British football punditry:

When was the last time you saw two pundits disagree vehemently with one another?

Maybe he's used to working with professionals!

You're not saying what he said. If you're seriously telling me that the likes of the Shearer/Linekar/Hansen love-in we see every Saturday night is professional then I pity you.

Answer the question I posted above, rrrr's mate.

I think our current punditry is poor, I think RTE'S is poorer. My opinion. Couldn't give a toss about arguing it with you as i'm off for an early one. I'm sure you can find someone else to fight with.

I see pundits disagree quite alot, especially during skys champs league coverage. It doesnt have to be 'vehemently' does it? Disagreements don't always have to end up in an argument :D

What is wrong with you? Why can't people debate without people walking off in a huff! You've got the same symptom as British pundits. You don't want to disagree with anyone.

The closest to a disagreement I've seen on the BBC recently was when Robbie Savage dared to look at Hansen and tell him he thought he was wrong. Hansen was visibly uncomfortable and Linekar jumped in and changed the subject in case an actual debate might break out. Awful awful stuff.

Think that the football analysis on both sides is sh**e to be honest. MOTD is no longer worth watching with all the crap Lineker spouts out and Hansen is so smug. Dunphy and Giles are dated. Giles only ever talks about effort, determination and hard work. TBH It's tedious listening to him.
