Next week sees the first of the European Breeze Up Sales. For those that are unsure about the difference between a breeze up sale and an ordinary sale, a breeze up allows the prospective buyer the opportunity to watch the horse work under a rider (“breezing” is the term used for a steady piece of work) before the sale takes place. Most breeze ups (including this one) are for flat bred two year olds, though a small number of National Hunt breeze up sales are starting to be staged. The Goffs sale takes place at Kempton Racecourse, with the horses breezing on track at 10am before the sale gets underway at 3pm. The sale is the smallest of the 6 major European breeze-ups (also Doncaster in April, Tattersalls in April and again in May and Arqana (France) in May) with just 100 lots catalogued. Sires with lots catalogued include: Acclamation (3) Bushranger (5) Dandy Man (7) Dubawi (1) Exceed and Excel (3) Henrythenavigator (4) Intense Focus (2) Kodiac (8) Myboycharlie (3) Sakhee’s Secret (2) The pedigrees at breeze up sales are not usually particularly stellar, as the price a breeze up horse will fetch is lower than the prices at the higher end yearling sales, but some lots to watch out for are: Lot 1 filly Dubawi/Maziona – first foal out of winning half-sister to THE GEEZER Lot 11 filly Bushranger/No Way – half-sister to G2 winner RYEHILL DREAMER Lot 15 colt Henrythenavigator/Pete’s Fancy – half-sister to G2 winner TRES BORRACHOS Lot 50 filly Holy Roman Emperor/Vee Gita – first foal out of unraced half-sister to G1 winner VALE OF YORK Lot 52 colt Iffraaj/Woodbury – dam winning half-sister to BORDERLESCOTT Lot 56 colt Diamond Green/Zeena – dam placed half-sister to G1 winner PRESVIS Lot 60 colt Exceed and Excel/Anse Victorin – dam unraced half-sister to G1 winners DIVINE PROPORTIONS and WHIPPER Lot 71 colt Archipenko/Close Knit – dam unraced half sister to G3 winner DUNDONNELL, family of DANEHILL Lot 93 colt Kheleyf/Innocency – second dam half-sister to G1 winner NEW APPROACH
We should pick a few sales each year and pick say three from each sale and see who gets the best return per £ spent. Though I expect PN would wipe the floor with us! I meant to follow the ones we picked at a breeze up sale last year but forgot and lost track of the thread.
I am taking what is known as shots in the dark, but those shots would be lots 31-43-87. Both 31 & 87 to try and get that Giants Causeway blood as he was one of my favourite horses. I have chosen 43 in the hope of an electric sprinter with a great turn of foot. I would be interested in knowing what they go for, do they post such info afterwards Princess? Thanks for posting
You can find what they go for and who buys them on the sales house' websites Bluesky or indeed on the bloodstock section of the racing post. What PN is brilliant at is finding where they end up in training and what they get called.
My three are as follows; Lot 22; Chestnut colt; English Channel - Raw Gold Lot 41; Chestnut Filly; Sakees Secret - Swan Sea Lot 69; Kodiac - Church Mice
My three - Lot 18 - GR, F, 2-y-o, Dark Angel — Queen Of Fools (Xaar) Early foal, half sister of juvenile winner Powerful Wind and for me she is by a much better sire than that one. Lot 39 - B, C, 2-y-o, Dark Angel — Stoneware (Bigstone) Later foal, but related to winners Lot 41 - CH, F, 2-y-o, Sakhee´s Secret — Swan Sea (Sea Hero) Related to Titus Alone, and is another who looks an ideal two year old early season filly. Three winners for you. Its noticeable that Henrythenavigator has quite a few entered, is this a suggestion that his crop are forward?
Nass, I think the number of Henrythenavigators is mainly down to the fact that he did very well in Europe with his first crop, despite standing in the USA. As a result Coolmore brought him back from Kentucky to stand in Co Tipperary this season. Basically the sellers are cashing in while the sire is hot property!
I'll stick my head on the line here, my selections: Lot 1 - Dubawi/Maziona Lot 61 - English Channel/Antahkarana Lot 83 - US Ranger/Dynamous
I just wanted to re-post my thanks for the updates Princess. I was away all day on Wednesday so I could not follow the sale. I was however delighted one went for £75,000 even if the other two went for less than the price of a poor second hand car. I will no doubt be throwing money at them blindly should they make it to a racecoures, as I am already emotionaly invested in them..... thanks to you.
