Sir Alex stopping as manager of Man U in the summer. In my opinion exactly the right decision at exactly the right time, but he´ll be a hard act to follow. http://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/0/football/22447018
One very interesting thing he says, and not something that can be said of many boards in the country - " in my early years, the backing of the board, and Sir Bobby Charlton in particular, gave me the confidence and time to build a football club, rather than just a football team ".
Couldn't say a single bad word about his achievements in the game. I would say he is simply the best manager the game would ever say, and anyone who says otherwise is probably jealous/bitter.
One wonders how close he was to the sack despite the support in his early years. Did Mark Robins save his career? http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport1/hi/football/teams/m/man_utd/6096520.stm
Agree great manager one of the best, if he had managed abroad and had success then may be I'd say out right best but he has had a comfortable bubble with one of the richest clubs in europe. Could he have done what Mourinho has done? Quick success in a multitude of countries and won the CL with Porto? I'm not saying he isn't one of the best but it depends on the measure, if its sustained domestic success then give the man a badge! If Mike phelan fancies a new challenge.........................
Good to see a manager leave at the top and on his own terms. One of the greats who broke the Liverpool mould and has transformed the face of English football. Can't imagine that McNasty is waiting for an enquiry from Sir Bobby!
Outstanding manager, can't underestimate his achievements and completely agree about the timing. They've got some good young players to keep momentum which will almost certainly be David Moyes. Interesting to see who Everton bring in. I reckon Martinez myself, they'll be looking long term as well.
Did anyone see in the Telegraph that, of the teams who SAF played against more than 10 times, Norwich had the best record? Apparently he lost 35% of the games he played against Norwich.
This will leave a huge gap in the British game. I have never known a manager to protect his club and players so earnestly. He was wrong so many times in his outbursts but he was doing it for the right reasons. And he was quite happy to pick British lads. The end of the Busby era signalled a decline. I just wonder I there is anyone out there to carry the mantle.
what about asking Mike Phelan to bring us all what he has learned? the man was a genius for us as a player
Bob Paisley has a better record 13 major trophies in 9 years including 6 League Titles and 3 European Cups but his great achievements always seem to get overlooked
A different era JWM.Cloughie took Derby and then Forest to league titles. That would be impossible in today's circumstances.I would place Shankly third with Clough in between.....and probably Robson fourth.
What difference does the era make? Football has always been 11 v 11 played on a pitch or was football only invented after 1992? If you look at Clough's record you could argue that he only won the trophies he did when he had Peter Taylor behind him! I'm not decrying what Ferguson has achieved but there are other great managers who should be recognised for their achievements other than old bacon face himself.
The era makes a world of difference.I doubt that anyone could make a decent side out of Ipswich in the 2010's
