The official Off-Topic Chat Thread now known as "Beefy's Corner".
Firstly, the normal rules of the site apply. You cannot start a discussion about contentious issues, Politics, Religion, or show Porn, etc... The flip side of this arrangement is that there will be a much stricter enforcement of the "no going off topic" rule which has always been the case anyway, on the other threads.

Secondly, the normal rules of the Saints board will apply, (except that you can go off-topic obviously). This is not going to become a "private GC Lite." Personal insults will not be tolerated, and neither will goading someone to draw them out. The whole tone of this board has suffered in the past as differing views have been aired and there have been far too many angry exchanges. Vitriolic exchanges are not welcome and will be dealt with as appropriate. If you have fallen out with a poster put him on your ignore list and don't rise to the bait!
If you see content which is not appropriate, please send the mods a PM rather than fronting up the poster and let us deal with it to save a bun-fight. Lastly, if a thread is closed or deleted by one of the Mods, and you have some good reason that it should reopen, then send us a PM with your reasons. Simply re-posting the same thread again to be confrontational would be considered very provocative and would probably lead to action being taken.

It would seem that large numbers of posts and subjects causes problems for mobile phone users to access this site. So from time to time it will be necessary to close the threads down and start a new one.

Dan, if you're ready with your slide rule, the old Beefy will be ready for totting up.

Beefy's on a hell of a hot streak. Hopefully his girlfriend isn't feeling too left out after all this extra time he's been spending with us.

Oh yeah, **** 'em. I think that about covers it.

I missed all this earlier conversation. I quite like the way LD condemns green energy after it has effectively been around for only a few years and is still very much in its infancy, whereas coal, oil, gas has been utilised on an industrial scale for the last 150-200 years or so. I think they had a few false starts too.

Now where's that candle to light the stairs to bed..?

The fact is it's barely even an area for debate because those older energy sources you mentioned continue to grow scarcer and more expensive while the green, renewable sources of energy become more and more efficient and affordable with time. Only some sort of supervillain who wishes the world harm could oppose green energy at this point.

You may know that I keep a half-open eye on new technologies providing ways of converting energy extremely efficiently. There is new technology on the horizon that is about to change the balance of the World economy, if fully adopted. It reads like I've taken some illegal substance, but it is true. The problem is that the World economy is still founded on the price of oil. It is the base currency for everything and changing that is going to take some time.

Renewable energy is one big con trick performed by vested interests and sandal wearing do gooders. We needed more nuclear ala France and need to follow the yanks and invest heavily in shale gas production. Won't happen though because the establishment have bought into the lefties simplistic view of the world. If we rely on idiots like Caroline Lucas to define our energy policy , we'll all end up like The Amish whilst living in windmills.

Take it from someone who lives in an area where shale gas production has taken place: you want no part of it. A couple test wells for fracking operation were set up in Nova Scotia a few years ago...it ended with several million litres of untreated and highly toxic wastewater being dumped into the ecologically and economically important Bay of Fundy, and at least one massive open-air tailings pond that the company simply opted to leave be because they had no plans for dealing with it. Oh, and because it turned out that the water was quite radioactive (a common thing, as a number of radioactive elements tend to occur in large quantities in shale formations), and thus couldn't simply be trucked to a water treatment plant and then back into the water cycle, which is what they were planning to do before the province got the brilliant idea to test the stuff. Oops.

What do they want to do now? Simply drill another hole and dump 'er in, a practice that has quite a bad reputation, given that it often ends up with that waste being pumped directly into potable groundwater, which is something of a bad thing when it has high levels of arsenic, petrochemicals and radionuclides. But anything else would cut into their profit margin, so the giant pond(s) of it sits there while they wait to see whether the government will clean it up for them, or gives in and allows them to dump it into the ground to unknown effect.

Nova Scotia has a long and colourful history of fellating any heavy industry that promised a few jobs, to such an extent that we have a giant toxic waste site in the middle of a city, and even our political parties left, right and center won't touch fracking at the moment...all such operations are suspended on review. So, no, it's not just a simplistic leftist view of things that would stop the practice; it's basic ****ing common sense, particularly in a country such as yours which cannot so easily spare a handful of aquifers being declared unsafe for human consumption.

Ducky you sound awfully like Jon Gaunt sometimes....saying that, it's true that Caroline Lucas and the Green Party have made a complete pig's ear of running Brighton council, ensuring they'll never get voted in anywhere again. But then, I don't think anybody here is suggested we let the Green Party have a go!?

Is there enough interest in the Ashes to have a seperate thread or are people happy to just use this one?

I'll be following it. Solid start from Root and Cook. Sounds like a pitch made for Swann and it'll be interesting to see how this young Aussie spinner does.
