Please check it out and give it a thumbs up. Greatest player this city and maybe country has ever produced (and a very, very distant relation of mine) but never saw much footage of him until I came across that compilation video uploaded in the last year.

Very good quality for the time too, please give it a thumbs up or a comment, tragic that it has so few views!

Incredible player and would be worth £100 million today. As Trevor Brooking wrote: was he the world's greatest centre half or the world's greatest centre forward?

Worlds greatest centre forward? That's a big statement from Brooking. Just looking at Alan Shearers top 10 goals and you'll find that John Charles didn't have those in his locker. I hate comparing players from different eras, but if people come out with statements like that then they need to be challenged.

The top player of his generation? Maybe.

Shearer doesnt deserve to be anywhere near the same sentence as John Charles , Alan was a big fish in a small pond, shat himself when offered tthe chance to sign for a big club and prefered to stay small time and pretend to be great. Won nothing apart from a league medal which was bought for him by Jack walker , anyway the main reason for not being anywhere near the best is his totally **** celebrtions !!...<laugh>

ffs alan do something different for once mun!!

Shearer was just an example - and you'll find that the majority of his goals were in the Prem, just as John's goals were in Serie A, because Wales were never in any major competitions.

If you really want a top class striker - look no further than CR07. Look at the range of his goalscoring ability at Club and International level (far better than Messi who is relatively poor at International level) and you'll find Trevor Brooking eating his hat.

Yeah agree there mate CR7 is probably one of the best of all time and has been mugged off by corrupt FIFA for years , he should of had this at least twice already IMO. He does everything and also can perform for his national team unlike Messi ,a truely great player can inspire lesser players and cristiano is one of those, i detest shearer because any true pro worth their salt would want to test themselves at the highest level,he never had the balls to do that at Man utd when given the chance, bellemy though he was a prick as well, i do love bellers honesty and he nailed shearer for me calling him a pretend hard man or something ..<laugh>

As we have discussed many times its incredibly difficult to compare players from different eras. Its sufficient to say that Big John was a world class player in his era and would be worth a bob or two in todays silly transfer values

Quite right Monty - our only proper appearance at a Major Championship. But that takes nothing away from the point I am making.

PGF, Brooking was talking about John in his book the 100 greatest ever British footballers. He asked the question, WHEN JOHN WAS PLAYING, was he the world's greatest centre half or the world's greatest centre forward? There is no other player in the history of football of whom that question can be asked. He was regarded as the world's most complete player in that there wasn't a position on the field (keeper apart) that he couldn't play and play with quality.

Players, managers, journalists, pundits and football historians the world over raved about his ability. They include people such as Bobby and Jackie Charlton, Matt Busby, Bobby Moore and others too many to mention. The guy that took him to Italy said that if he ever found another John Charles, he'd carry him to Italy on his shoulders.

With respect Shearer was nowhere near the same class. Sure he scored some spectacular goals - playing with a Mickey Mouse lightweight ball, on perfect pitches with everything that modern technology offers today's sportsmen. He also played in an era when proper tackles had been outlawed and genuine hardmen neutralised.

They erected a statue of Charlo at Juventus and he has been voted as the best ever foreign footballer imported to Italy. Pretty impressive when you consider they had the likes of Maradonna, Platini and even Laudrup, not to mention a host of top quality South Americans. I could write a book on this subject, so I'll cut it short. Sure, Shearer was an excellent striker but, imo, in a hypothetical game, if John took time off from scoring goals to play centre half and mark him, Shearer would win sod all in the air and be lucky to get a kick when the ball was on the deck. Yes, John was THAT good. And I've seen them both play.

Have you tried kicking those old leather balls though? I have and it's difficult! Even when watching old George Best clips I didn't see many 'screamers' just loads of dribbles. That's no disrespect to Alan Shearer BTW, class player, **** pundit!

I'd turn down Real Madrid to play for Swansea City provided the money was enough to afford me a comfortable lifestyle.

1 goal in League 2 for the Swans would mean more to me than a Champions League winners medal, guess we're all different.

Strange thing to "detest" him for though ...

I appreciated he was regarded as the best player of his era Ivor, I mentioned that in one of my posts. Regarding playing in different positions, it just doesn't happen theses days to that extent - but I reckon Christiano Ronaldo could be a reasonable centre half as well!! The big difference between the two is that John was a gentleman while CR07 can be a naughty boy at times!
