A good Roman soldier was surely worth this,
To pay for his toils, yet often brassic,
'Tis the element I want, often white or grayish,
Frankie powered him home in a bygone Classic.

Thanks Tam. Never was any good at these but always great to see them and have a go. I have to start from somewhere and the only place I can start is the jockey which I presume is Frankie Durr (possibly Dettori but bygone sounds further back). Now Sodium is an element which is whitish so that could be it but have no idea about the other 2 clues.

Anybody able to help out?

You have it right, Ron. Frankie Durr won the 1966 St Leger on Sodium you clever sod :) Worth his salt ......

Hi Tam, how the devil are you mate? You are a rare visitor these days!

"To pay for his toils, yet often brassic," what's that about then? Even when I know the answer, I can't understand the clues. Nothing changes <laugh>

Holidaying on the Danish coast Tam - experiencing everything mother nature can throw at us (well, lots of wind and rain at least). Never again <laugh>
