It's been called Dram Shop since just after WW2, originally it was Henry Wilson & Son wine and spirit merchants, it became a pub in 1960.
Cheers - for some reason I'd got London bar in my memory - just shows what 40 years does - I knew the manager for a while and a couple of the bar staff - I worked in Troglodytes Bar at the time
On one of my return visits to Hull in the late sixties, I recall going to The George on Walton Street. They had an area with UV lighting and I think quasi psychedelic images in fluorescent paint on the walls. I think they called it the "Blue Room." The music was loud and the place was packed and sweaty. Things were going well with a couple of lasses until my mate waved some keys and although he didn't have a car, offered to run them home at the end of the night. Once outside and when asked, "Where's your car?" He replied, "Don't have one, you get a ten yard start." At this point we were unceremoniously invited to **** off! Edit: I think it must have been 1968 because I remember (remarkably) it was the first time I heard America by The Nice and being incredibly impressed by it.
Worked as a Chef there about 30yrs ago, was always incredibly popular. Was owned by Trust House Forte at the time. How sad it's no longer operating .
Not 'notorious' as such - but the Hull Arts Centre (Hull Truck) used to have bands on every Sunday night. Saw Suzie Quattro there the week she got to number 1 with Can the Can. Queuing outside whilst they rehearsed the intro was great.
It was indeed, though i suspect Suzi Quattro played several years befor Grouxho's started up,by Thurstan Binns if i recall correctly, also saw Killing Joke there, pretty sure it was a rearanged gig from the Dingwalls fire
I see several mentions of the bloke with half a head here, I played pool with him in Linnet and Lark once, he was a really good player. But it was very off puttting looking at his head! Does anyone know who the **** he was? I heard that he was committing suicide but pulled the shotgun away at the last minute and blew half his face off. Never seen him since, it was the late 90's when I ran into him.
