A couple of years ago, I noticed that Aldi were doing a Jameson's rip off. Can't remember what it was called but it was about £13 and was virtually like for like. Typically, I cotton onto it, buy a couple of bottles then sod's law - they seem to stop selling it. I can't even remember what it was called and if I ask the staff in my nearby Aldi I think it's safe to assume they're going to be clueless/shoeless if I just describe it as per above. Don't suppose you ever came across it, or if they happen to still sell it in other Aldi shops?
This was from two years ago. Any of these? Aldi has continued its reign over other supermarkets by winning yet another blind taste test, this time for one of its budget whiskies. At the International Spirits Challenge, Aldi's £12.99 Highland Black 8 Year Old Scotch Whisky was awarded a gold medal, despite being pitted against bottles worth six times the price. The budget supermarket was also awarded silver medals for its Glen Orrin 5 Year Old Malt Whisky (£13.29) and Clarke's Kentucky Bourbon Whisky (£14.99) , and a bronze medal for their Highland Earl Scotch Whisky (£11.49). At this year's Spirits Business Scotch Whiskey Masters awards, Aldi also scooped gold for their Highland Black whisky and also for their Glen Orrin Malt Whisky, while their Glen Marnoch Speyside Single Malt Whisky was given a "master" certification.
Sorry, can't help. Not a big whisky connoisseur, prefer rum for a straight drink, especially Lamb's Navy, Woods 100 proof or most of all Pussers, though there are some single malts I like but would rather have Jamesons and, even better to me anyway, Bushmill.
Thanks Chazz. None of those unfortunately, think I've tried them all, this was just a total Jameson's rip off - but a very good one.
What about Clontarf? while Aldi, which has particularly hot deals on spirits, is offering bottles of Clontarf 1014 Irish Whiskey (40% abv) for £14.99 while stocks last. Again, it has that appealing, spicy, charred bourbon character, though it has too much caramel sweetness for me. All are produced by the innovative Cooley distillery.
Appreciate the effort mate, but I'm sure it's called something else. It was in a Jameson's greeny type bottle too. Buggin' me somewhat.
Some of the write up actually fits with my fading memory, but the bottle doesn't look like what I recall.
