Doubt we will match this League 2 attendance from September 2003/ 2004 today, when people were locked out and turned away for an early season night game . Blame it on innovative turnstiles, adventurous rebranding, negative football under Peter Taylor and underachieving stuff under Steve Bruce, monthly debits, a lack of a ticket office, no pay on the day, or whatever you want. 3 divisions higher but somehow the ball's been dropped. I know who I blame.
I remember that game. I took the old man and was late setting off as the alarm at work wouldn't set. We didn't get tickets in advance as wasn't sure the old man would be up to it as wasn't that long after his heart attack and didn't anticipate the demand. After queuing at different turnstiles and getting turned away they then "found" some extra seats in the East Stand we got in and only just missed kick off but couldn't find these extra seats and had to stand on the steps. I loved that game but was **** scared the old man was going to keel over having to stand for the full match but he kept stopping me every time I tried to ask someone if they would be kind enough to give up their seat, but that's him all over, he would risk his own life rather than put someone else out.
One of my favourite ever City matches. I think that was the point when I felt City had what it took to finally get out of the then Division 3 after 3 years of disappointment previously.
It's been quite a journey since that night since those lowly days (and nights). However did we manage to be playing our 5th season in the PL but with a smaller fanbase than in the League 2 days? It takes a special kind of ownership to do that.
That night we had the look of a 'sleeping giant' who'd woken up... Now we're in a kind of semi-comatose decline..
I, along with many others, couldn't get into the match, but as we were toddling off home to listen to it on the radio instead, I caught sight of Adam Pearson, running around, trying to get on top of things near the main entrance. I managed to have a quick word with him, and politely expressed my dissatisfaction at the situation. He took my name and address and promised me free tickets to the next home game, which he duly followed up on. I've always had problems with people doubting or calling the guy after that. Oldman - was you with me at that one? Can't remember.
The one thing that showed up how the KC was poorly designed with no thought to the realities of segregation for football was that game. Not helped by the oafish local plot's intransigence. As for Pearson, a businessman I know was invited to look around the KC before it opened as a thank you for him sponsoring the club on occasions at BP. He said to Pearson that he wouldn't be able to pay the new rates. Pearson said no problems, this is a thank you for your support in the past. He then introduced him to John Holmes (not that John Holmes) who showed him round the stadium and the new facilities. He ended up buying 2 Premier Club tickets. He sold the business a few years later but his sons, who had never been interested in City previously are still season pass holders in South Stand along with one of their sons. If only the genius businessmen in charge now had a fraction of Pearson's nous.
Meanwhile in the Championship, 51,900at Newcastle,31,000 at Villa, 30,000 at Leeds, 27,000 at Brighton for a Friday night televised game, 26,000 at little Norwich, 20,000 at struggling Wolves. Over 20,000 at Cardiff with all that is going on there. You can bet if AP was here we wouldn't have 4,000 empty seats in the home areas.
Crowd swelled by plenty of Polskis today. If only Hull's Norwegian community had the same enthusiasm.
If only Pearson hadnt fiddled the deal to allow Bartlett to get a mortgage on the stadium to buy the club we wouldnt be in this mess.
Last City v Swansea game I went to in Hull was New Years day 1966. We beat them 4-1 in front of a decent crowd but cannot remember either the attendance or scorers. We went on to finish Div 3 Champions.
How do you remember these anecdotes bmb? I have trouble remembering yesterday's score. I had to edit the Arsenal mdt as I mentioned the cup final game and got the score wrong
