Had a conversation with my old man the other day about this, he was going on about how good it was growing up in the Sixties and that he had to work to pay for his uni. Presumably he didn't have to pay £9000 odd a year to go to uni. We have a nice generational spread on here. Discuss.
As one of the first wave baby boomers, as you dad says, it was a brilliant time to be growing up. We were incredibly lucky on so many fronts.
Are some of these more American definitions? I'd never even heard of gen x/millennial till I heard it on Survivor. I'd be classed on gen x, but I consider myself something of a digital go getter I guess. People love classification though.
I was five when the fifties began, so every available hour of my main childhood years was spent in innocent play with pals usually outside and it was wonderful. At sixteen I started work just in time for the super sixties and all the obvious pleasures that accompanied that decade, wonderful, I consider myself most fortunate.
Millenial. Not that fun. Honestly probably wish I was a Gen-Xer. Though I'm currently sat in a hotel room in Orlando at half past 4 in the morning thanks to my job, so I can't complain.
Interestingly, I've befriended a couple of female 26 year olds - so Millennials - through work and hang around with them socially, and they both recently declared they wouldve given anything to have hit their late teens as I did in 93. They genuinely view it as a golden period to be that age and look at me starry eyed as I talk about good music, almost overnight, dominating the charts and popular culture and the optimism of New Labour before it all turned to ****e. Unless someone on here is set to prove me wrong, I think one thing we can all agree on is that now is the worst time post war to be growing up as a teenager. I genuinely feel sorry for anyone around the 14 year mark now, I'd be ****ing terrified of what the future held for me.
Interesting. I’m of that age too and went to loads of gigs in the 90s – loved most of it, at the time. But, as I learnt more, I despised more and looking back I hate most of the music from back then and did so easily by the time the decade was out. You had to work for the knowledge though, at the time. Also, I suppose your friends attitude was similar to when I was young: I’d look up to people who were ‘of age’ in 1976 – mainly for the music and clothes. Also, in football terms, as a relatively starving downtrodden tramp of the Dolan Corps – I’d also envy ‘being there’ for the rise from 1982.
I'm with you, I'm not nostalgic and don't go to these gigs of overweight, touring indie bands I first saw 20 years ago after one last payday now they've suffered a divorce... Is there a sadder sight to behold than 40+ men trying to relive their youth in front of a band of similar age thinking purely of the pay cheque? That all being said, looking back the 90s is still a ****load better than any popular culture or the music now dominating the charts, if such a thing still happens.
I loved being a teenager in the late 70's, there was a glorious grimness about everything and it felt like we were part of a movement that was going to shake up the establishment. There were so many different groups of people, all with their own style, their own music and a fierce desire to stand out from the crowd. Something that's been sadly lacking ever since.
Generation X - Teenage years in the early-mid 90s. Loved the music at the time and went to Uni mid 90s. I was probably one of the last few to get a decent education without 5 figure debt sums. I do sometimes wish I'd lived through the 60s though - I'm sure the nostalgia videos we see now are highly romanticised but it didn't half look like fun!
33 this Monday, what does that make me? Quite happy with my life and popular culture throughout. Have found my tastes in most things have changed a lot since I was 18 or 21. You just grow up don't you. Well, most of us do.
Millenial and I've mostly enjoyed growing up in the era that I have done. The major gripe is being 26 and still not being able to afford my own home!
Oh yeah, in case anyone didn't know, I've got a job where I get paid for doing sod all. And get to go to Florida as a part of it. Thought I'd just let everyone know.
You've got a job doing sod all and it gets you to Florida? Actually, you can't blame this kid for being a bit chuffed. Quill, enjoy mate
