Away from the DA carry on.

So the carrier bags comes in with effect from today.

All the stores with 250 employees or more must charge and there are some exemptions such as fish and hot food etc.

However my local store is charging 5p, and blaming the charge by the government. It's a Nisa store, so they don't have more than 250 employees.

Nisa is a chain yes, but not wholly owned like the large supermarkets. So are all your local stores doing the same I wonder? And doing it as a way of making money.

We should be able to return the plastic bags to the shop and get a 5p refund just like we could do with bottles.

Then, you could use what you need and return (for proper disposal) the used bags.

That way the stores could still supply 'free' bags.

Good idea, just don't like the fact that shops will charge 5p and blame the government when really they are going to pocket it. It's the principle

Apparently the stores will see nothing from it all the proceeds go to charity. For me this is a smart move and one which should cut out a hell of a lot of waste. Just remember to keep plenty bags in your car in case you may end up at a supermarket.

Lidl have been charging for carrier bags for nearly two years now. I think it's in line with an environmental policy to stop people throwing bags into the dustbin and asking the store for a new one every time they go in. I take my carrier bag in my pocket whenever I go to Lidl and it works out at about 15p every two or three months, which I don't mind. 60p or70p a year really isn't a problem, and if it gets people out of wasteful habits, I'm basically for it.

It's to protect wildlife, because some arseholes just chuck them away willy-nilly. I have a stash so I don't mind.

And I totally agree with all the reasons for it, and if I do my shopping g and don't have a bag for life then fair enough, but those like my local which appear to charge when they shouldn't is crap

My local shop doesn't charge but my local Tesco are now charging 40p per bag.
I have to say, I agree with it & have no problem at all.
If I'm just off down the local Happy Shopper then I always take a bag with me.
Sometimes when I've amassed a few, I take them down there & give them to the Indian lass that runs it & she re-uses them.
Some I use as bin liners, the rest I take to the shop.
    Can't see any problem tbh.

You can get two packets of space raiders for that price which are contained within plastic bags.

Are they regulating food packaging? Because that's the real problem. Much easier for the Tories to push responsibility on the consumer instead of their precious business they wouldn't want to upset. One ain't worth doing with out the other for me.

    <doh> always one!
I shop at lidl and aldi mainly. Both of which charge for bags. I have no issue paying for bags and have loads of them in my car seat pocket so I know they're there. I also use boxes they're about to chuck which cost nothing!

I bet Levy is happy to save 5p.... After all he wasted £90,000,000 after selling Gareth Bale !?!

You think Levy should do it the Sunderland way

    Sunderland

    Income: £101m (MD £16m,TV £72m, Com £13m)

    Wages: £68m (67% of income)

    Pre-tax loss: £16.3m

    Debt: £39m

Dick Advocaat has to save not just a season but stop a drop that could trigger meltdown.

    Tottenham

    Income: £181m (MD £44m, TV £95m, Com £42m)

    Wages: £105m (58% of income)

    Pre-tax profit: £36m

    Debt: Zero

Daniel Levy drives a hard bargain. He also runs a tight ship. In shape to challenge the top four.
