Cattermole pens new deal Published: 02 July, 2015 by Stuart Vose Fan favourite signs new long-term contract. Midfielder Lee Cattermole has put pen to paper on a new long-term deal at the Stadium of Light. The former England Under-21 international joined the Black Cats in 2009 from Wigan Athletic on an initial four-year deal, before signing an extension to his contract in October 2012, keeping him on Wearside until 2016. The 27-year-old has now signed a new five-year deal, committing his future to the club until 2021. Head coach Dick Advocaat said: “Lee is the controller of the side. He is a motivator, a leader and central to the success of our team. To know that he will be with us for many years to come is very important to the club.” Sunderland AFC’s sporting director Lee Congerton added: “Lee is a hugely important part of our team, both on and off the field. “He has ten years of experience playing in the Barclays Premier League, which is incredible when you consider he is still only 27 years old, and we are delighted that he has committed his long-term future to Sunderland.” Cattermole made 28 appearances last season and is now just three games shy of 150 for the club. Having made his professional debut with Middlesbrough in 2005, Cattermole has played a total of 273 senior career games in all competitions. Spot the Catts please log in to view this image
Good start to transfer season. Decent signing in Coates and this made my day. Few more signings to come.
Very happy with this, as the man said, he is our motivator and we're always a better team when he's in the side. Great news.
chance for another sweepstake that we can all forget about in due course...how many (total) cards will Catts get in the 6 years left???? 58!
Great news, he's pretty much fist name on the team sheet when fit and I think it's fair to say we'd have been relegated for the last 2 years without him.
In my opinion this will be the best deal we will do this window. Him and Larsson are our two key players and the team should be built around them. Their work rate is exceptional and Caatts is getting past the automatic card a game phase. He is more sinned against than sinner being unfairly targeted by refs. I don't think he could have gone to one of the top clubs, maybe Everton would be his best bet but other clubs that would want him like a Stoke or maybe WBA are similar to us and don't have the potential that we have. All in all, a good day for us.
Good to a consensus of positive support for a player I completely love to see in the shirt. Hes a born winner and has that tough mentality as well as being the enforcer in the middle. As a centre half I'd love to see him in front of me and as an attacking player I'd be delighted to have him protect me too. He is my first pick EVERY week. Buy in the flair and pace and build the team around him would be my advice to Dick.
I hold my hands up and am tucking into a huge slice of humble pie, because I was one of his fiercest critics, particularly during the Steve Bruce era when he was often described as a liability by me and others who were fed up with his discipline record and giving away daft free kicks on a regular basis. Fair play to Catts, because he has matured into a quality player and club favourite, who I now admire for his leadership, determination and total loyalty to our club. Give him the captains armband back Dick, because the lad has earned the right to be reinstated as club captain.
