4 and that's if I give myself Kilkline instead of Kilkenny. I knew the blonde defender had a first name of Gregg, just not Halford.
They took 3,200 to QPR. Watched a bit of it. Very boisterous, jumping up and down, going crackers when they scored. A bit different to many of ours, seated until we score than rising slowly to applaud politely like a crowd at a cricket match when a boundary is scored.
Terminally bland club, they could hide in the pack when there were 22 teams, along with with Soton and Ipswich. You would struggle to name any 'stars' they had in 34 years, any memorable games apart from Willie Carr/Ernie Hunt donkey kick and that Cup win. I remember when were the first (?) to win at their new ground, they seemed a 'massive' club compared to what were used to. How times change eh?
Still did well, all things considered, to remain there that long. Would our fans be happy or disappointed to do the same? (I would hope if we were in the top flight for that long that we would progress more than they did). Or would they become bored of year on year of playing the same teams and knowing that at the end of the season there was chance of being in the running? Some have got bored with it after a handful of seasons in the top flight. Would it be preferable to have it interspersed with relegation and successful promotion campaigns?
Wasn't Keith Houchen the cup winner? That's one of my favourite finals tbh. Was it really 30 years ago?
DQPR is only 50 miles away, so 3,200 is disappointing for them. Perhaps there was an antiques fair on ? If ever there was going to handbags after a match, it would be DQPR v BHA. That said, kudos to them for bringing a Special for the Cup game in 1986.
Different times, different finance- you could stay up without breaking the bank if you were well run. Of course people weren't so entitled back then and it was every other Saturday at affordable prices, 3 pm kick off. Cov also had a car industry back then and was comparatively affluent, before it became a 'Ghost Town'.
Think I read recently that Coventry haven't finished in the top half of any division they've been in for about 25 or more years. That's punishing.
That chocolate brown away kit with blue and white trim was a shocker, sponsored by Talbot if I remember correctly?
It was a ghost town by 1981 according to The Specials so the majority of the time in the First Division/PL was in a ghost town. Bloody horrible place.
