Bibiana Steinhaus has just been appointed as a referee for the Bundesliga next season. As far as I know, this is the first time a woman has been made a top flight referee? please log in to view this image
I have to say I think that women & men's football should be kept separate for many reasons, physicality for one, when it comes to playing. I wouldn't want to see anyone get hurt by some 12 stone ruffian ploughing into one of our PL stars that would roll to the other end of the pitch if their hair was knocked out of place. But in all seriousness, I don't think it would work playing & I feel that if a woman is officiating a game then she could be intimidated, we've seen it with many male refs over the years. This is just my opinion but I always wonder why women want to be a part of things that men do when they have the women's game to run. I look forward to seeing how many red numbers I get saying I'm sexist & wrong.
I played both codes of rugby and have taken part in games officiated by a female referees. There was no more an issue of a female referee getting physically hurt than there would have been if a male had refereed those games. Good ref's get themselves quickly into the right places in any sport. There was no difference in quality and the players respected the referee. OK, it was a novelty for the first five minutes, but once the game was on, you pretty much forgot about it. It's really up to the governing body to get a grip with the clubs and the players to stop the verbal/crowding crap in any sport. Female referees ... great, bring it on!
She's just been promoted to the Bundesliga, but she has been refereeing in the Bundesliga 2 for six years, so presumably she's done a good job so far. She's a copper.
Ok, so go on then, apart from appeasing the PC brigade, what benefits does a woman have in the men's game?
With respect you are asking the wrong question, it has nothing to do with being PC or it being a benefit, but good enough to do the job. Men referee women's games and does that matter? Not a jot. Why does the gender matter at all. Like in most walks of life, it is the job spec and the ability of the person to do it that matters. Frankly, I would rather have a feckin' stuffed monkey refereeing a game than Mark Clattenburg.
I often find it's quite revealing when I hear or read terms like "...the PC brigade" being mentioned in a discussion regarding class, gender or ethnicity.
There's no benefit. Gender is irrelevant. Why can men manage women's teams but we have no female managers in the men's game?
Hand on heart, no bullshitting you "PC brigade".... I was on a flight recently and the captain was a lady. It made me and fellow passengers nervous. Why? I don't know. But if you had an annonymous choice how many would pick a male pilot, rather than say it doesn't matter, the best person for the job etc. (Throws firework in, and retreats......)
Hmm. Less egotistical. Less likely to take risks. Probably had to be better at the job to get to the same position. ... yep, think I know my answer.
Gender is totally irrelevant in some sports. Equal opportunity at work. please log in to view this image
