I'm far enough away from the big fault lines that I would be fine. From what I understand the one that hit SF in the 80s wasn't even felt by people here.

    It's good you are safe.

You have any photos of the fire?

Cheers. If you google ......images for wentworth falls fires.... you will get the best. Fire danger is now over and is confined and localised to the bottom of the Jamieson Valley.

I felt several minor quakes when I lived in Oregon, also a few when I have been working in Japan. They are a regular occurrence. Nothing that caused too much damage but still quite unnerving. On the seismology map for Oregon & Washington, there have been 182 earthquakes in the past 2 weeks.

yeah, I did. thanks for posting. I was aware of all the stuff around the Cascadia fault. Living in Oregon you needed to be "just in case" and know where to go. All the coastal towns have tsunami escape routes signposted, and alarm systems in place. I was in an evacuation once after an offshore quake. It was all very orderly. There is a mountain range just back from the coast so it isn't far to higher ground. As it turned out the waves were not the severe and - that time - there was little damage and no casualties. But if (when) the big one comes it won't be so.

Why don't you all build moats around your houses with a drawbridge?

Just got a postcard today from my mate from Hull, who set off from Seattle a week or so ago on an 4000 mile 8 state tour of the West. He says he's driving through a hell of a lot of smoke, which is a bit intimidating as he's never driven before in the US - nor even on the wrong side of the road ! He's arriving here in just over 2 weeks, being an avid photographer he'll have quite s story to tell. Sounds awful.

Wouldn't they be better using picks and shovels or hiring a mechanical digger?

Na we drive on the RIGHT side of the road not the wrong side, you all drive on the left. Actually most of the world drives on the right, its really only a few former english colonies that drive on the left.

Yea the smoke moves depending on what time of day it is. Some times it gets so bad you can hardly drive and sometimes it so bad you cant leave the house. Even when you cant see it you can smell it and it makes peoples allergies act up.
