The list is longer than that Royston Harold Wilson Barbara Castle Tony Benn Roy Jenkins (pre LibDem) Reg Prentice Shirley Williams (pre LibDem) Roy Hattersley
I was 15 when I heard Enoch Powell speak at a hustings in Kilmarnock before the 1964 election. He spoke for 25 minutes without notes about why he believed the Conservative philosophy worked better in the interest of the nation. No insults, no petty points scoring. It did a lot to moderate my left-wing views. Maybe the trickle-down effect did actually work at that time, there was a consensus between the parties at that time on funding the public services, and education was not a pol;itical issue. However the trickle-down is now defying the laws of gravity, and New Labour and the Conservatives have been "intensely relaxed" about it, to use Milord Mandy's words. Reversing the trend would benefit the nation, but should not be a moral crusade, which only alienates large sections of the electorate.
Len McCluskey has just been re elected UNITE leader with less than 50% of the vote on a staggering 12% turnout. He suspended his main rival on trumped up charges yesterday. And people wonder why trade unionism in this country is on its arse.
I assume The Daily Mail is still furiously against the policy of capping energy prices? Surely it makes no difference whether it is Mrs May or Red Ed introducing it ?
Labour, sunk without trace in Scotland, now faces the same fate in Wales, which is poised to go Tory for the first time. However, Corbyn believes he has a policy which will prove to be an election winner- bringing Trade Union rights to the centre of the campaign. Go,Corby, go.
I know that Trade Union power is important but what about the new bank holidays 2 in March, 1 in April and 1 in November all in the cause of National unity plus the Pensioners and non-employed will love this idea
So Labour's plan for Brexit is No Brexit so why did we bother with a referendum? http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-politics-39698465
TBH I just want to get the whole over so that I know whether there will be an inquest or an obituary for the Labour Party. Corbyn unchained seems to keep finding new ways to lose votes. Mrs May is a grossly over-rated PM because in comparison to Jezza she looks positively Churchillian.
The Govts and businesses of India and Asia must be loving that. China's economy grew by nearly 7% in the last year - Corbyn's response is to give the Scots another free day off to eat deep fried Mars Bars.
The opinion polls historically underestimate Conservative suppprt by 2-4% - we call them "Shy Tories" in the trade.
The Conservative Party has a new election campaign, say nothing, do nothing & let Corbyn dig very large holes for himself & the Labour party. In its way a brilliant piece of negative campaigning. Just like in France this election is turning out to be vote for the party against the one you dislike the most, rather than vote for someone you support.
That's not true. There will be a manifesto with detailed policies. There hasn't been any negative campaigning - yet. It's the Labour Party's fault that they have insulted the British people by allowing a glorified ageing student to pretend that he is a potential Prime Minister. Example - Trident - Labour Party policy to re-new Trident Thousands of Labour voters jobs dependant on it. Labour leader - I will ignore Party policy & would never use Trident.
Labour has secured its first celebrity endorsement today - Ronnie O'Sullivan He is good at sinking reds
