Had the misfortune to come across this notorious individual as I thrashed Liverpool once again. I really pulled the stops out this time and managed 17-0. The Pool players do look as if they're taking a spanking. Sorry about the line running through the pic. Must find another decent photo editor after ditching PSP8. The lone Saints player is Isgrove, if memory serves:

I don't see the issue, You win your league which gives you the right to play for the one spot available, how is that not fair? Play offs are an accepted part of football.

It's not fair because there is one play-off slot for two leagues, it is not fair because two teams will win the league but only one gets promoted, no matter how well they did in the regular season. It's not fair because the play-offs are a lottery, and it's not even over two legs. It's not fair because why should a 9 month league season come down to a single 90 minute match when you've already won the league? It's not fair because why should one team go from the elation of winning the league to the despair of losing in the play-offs and losing out on promotion?

Play-offs are an accepted part of football yes, but never for league winners. If you finish 3rd, 4th, even 2nd... fine. If you win a league, you should get promoted (if you fulfil the criteria). No if's, no but's, no maybe's.

I'm sorry I still don't see the issue all the teams know that their reward for winning the league is a chance to play for a spot in the top league.

Why should the reward be just a chance to play for a spot and not an actual spot?

Can you name any other footbll league in the country where that's the case?

So we should just sit back and accept unfair rules?

    I meant football leagues...

And Rugby Union. You win the league, then you go into the playoffs to try and win the league again, playing against the teams who weren't as good as you in the regular season.

No, don't do that. Carry on complaining and then they'll change it. You'll never know then whether the added excitement at the end of the season helps with attendances or the general popularity of the sport, as it has with rugby league.

The irony of you protesting against something that might help raise the profile of the game you love isn't missed there for me.

Like I said, I'm not against play-offs and I do agree they add excitement to the end of the season, but in no way should a team that's already won the league be forced to play in them to gain promotion. Saying that, I would keep the match between the Northern and Southern Division winners to determine an overall winner as it would be fun, however regardless of the result, both teams would get promoted. Then the match would have more of a celebratory atmosphere, a competition between the two best teams in the league but one that doesn't in one of the teams experiencing the despair of missing out on promotion.

Your conclusion at the end there makes it a non-event and takes the competitiveness out of it. It then becomes a nothing game and unattractive. I think you should accept the rule and see if it helps promote the game more over the next couple of years.

This has definitely worked in rugby League. I agree that it is daft that a team that finishes top doesn't actually win the 'prize' but the Rugby League Grand Final is a massive spectacle and has really helped increase the awareness of the game. Neutrals love a do or die game. TV companies love a spectacle. Put those two things together and the recipe becomes an attractive one.
