My understanding is that being top at the end of the season, as Warrington now seemingly are, is secondary to winning the mini-league of eight teams, that starts at the semi-finals which now follow.
Well, Hull finished top of the regular league, Warrington just won the league leaders shield as they finished top after the 8-team mini league. Although the super 8 continue with the same points they finished the regular season with. So not much point in the teams who finished 7th and 8th competing really. However in the qualifiers (the bottom 4 teams of Super League and top 4 teams of the league below) all teams start on zero points as they are in seperate leagues. So now the qualifiers get whittled down to the 'million pound game' ie the two teams that finish fourth and fifth in their league with the top three of course promoted/status quo in Super League. The million pound game is then two teams battling for the fourth spot to get to the super league. Back to the super league and it's now the play offs between the top 4 teams. They have a semi final then a final to see who wins the Grand Final held at Old Trafford. Winning the Grand Final is seen as a better prize than the League Leaders trophy although opinion is divided on whether winning the Challenge Cup or the Grand Final is the greater prize. In attepmts to make the game more popular teams adopted Americanised names, most of which are still used today. Hull FC for example were Hull Sharks before reverting back to Hull FC. A few years back, French team Catalans Dragons were invited to the Super League. They were given immunity from relegation for (if memory serves) 4 years. They finished bottom of Super League at least once in that time* Next season a Canadian team is to join the second tier of Rugby League *I'm not the biggest fan of them all. Although I love the sport, I could be pulled up on a few things here ha! So after saying all that, I just have to say: The Rugby Football League really don't help themselves!!!!!! Great sport tho
Hull threw that away, they were absolutely awful, fair play to Warrington you can only play what is in front of you. Warrington deserve that shield over the course of the season, probably the most consistent side in the competition. Although it doesn't mean a lot unless you win the grand final as well.
Or Wigan or St Helens !!! Anyway really poor from Hull tonight. Shaul Sneyd Houghton extremely average and Wire fully deserved the win
Maybe football would be more popular and widely watched if they did away with old fashioned things like the team with the most points being the champions and the season ending after everyone has played everyone else home and away. Or having fans thinking winning a cup after 4 games, and playing it during the season,is a more notable achievement than topping the league. I've often thought that .RL's biggest enemies are the people in charge of the game.
Yeah i agree. The big players didnt turn up and played some dumb rugby in good field position. Why the hell did Shaul stop when he broke free ??
I know right, if he kept hold of it they'd have scored on the next play. Although they were unlucky not to get a penalty and a sin binning for the professional foul for holding down Taylor.
He could easily have sold the dummy and gone in the corner!!!! Different game then. Think theyll struggle to get up for Wigan theyre looking strong.
So it's still not decided ... Who was the team of 2016 ?! , I used to love watching me lad play for west hull but the elite of the sport is dragged down by what I assume is SKY and their desire for EVERY game to count . Footballs strength is , that it can get away with meaningless games n end of season trudgery... Rugby league can't and it puts me right off the rugby I grew up with
so warrington won the shield? so whats in the grand final? what retarded **** lol embarrassing sport hull fc had the most points so why didnt they win?
I love watching rugby league but the end of season circus on who has won what and who are the champions is a joke. I'm tempted to ring Gwylum on Radio humberside and ask him who are the champions. He is usually the fountain of knowledge arf
... Watched on the telly until I fell asleep after 20 minutes. Every move the same, five tackles then kick the ball as high as you can and hope someone drops it or you get a lucky bounce. And those scrums ? What's the point ? Woke up to see Warrington ? parading what looked like an aluminium toilet to about 200 away fans with the rest of the ground completely deserted.
There were more Warrington fans there than that to be fair. About the same as come to City for the average PL game. Which will have been a novelty instead of the usual two buses or so they usually see. Saw the presentation. You had to admire how the skilful Sky cameramen used angles and close-ups to disguise it was all happening in a virtually empty stadium as the thousands of fanatics hadn't stuck around to sing Old Faithful to their heroes, What was the crowd, by the way?
