As it's 100ft up the air, it seems fairly unlikely. :emoticon-0112-wonde

At least this one wasn't down to incompetence. Hilton decided that they wanted to increase the investment and improve the facilities originally planned, so had to file an amended planning application and though they obviously wanted to open for CoC, it's a large long term investment and it was more important to get it right, rather than get it ready early.

I know exactly how high it is. Have you not heard of urban climbers? Given free climbers can scale buildings over 500m high, this would be a walk in the park. :emoticon-0112-wonde:emoticon-0112-wonde:emoticon-0112-wonde

I am venturing into Hull today and will take the chance to have a good look around all what has gone on. It's a while since I have been into the city centre, so am looking forward to seeing what it all looks like.

    Public realm update

The work is continuing in multiple areas across the city in accordance with the programmed completion dates; this will mean most areas will be complete by December 2016, with Beverley Gate and some side streets complete by March 2017.

In addition, plans to create a new grand entrance into Queen’s Gardens from the Rose Bowl, originally scheduled to begin 2018, will also be brought forward for completion in March 2017.

    Ferensway Crossing

Single lane closures along Ferensway will stay in place as the work progresses to move, re-align and widen the pedestrian crossing facility. The operation of the new facility will be coordinated with the adjacent traffic signal junction to improve safety and traffic flow.

    Carr Lane

Tree pits are being installed along Carr Lane and these will be ready for planting with mature trees towards the end of November.

    Trinity Square

Four of the eight mirror pools have been installed in Trinity Square and the remainder will be finished in November.

Humber Dock Street, Humber Street & Pier Street Humber Street sandstone paving and refurbished cobbles are continuing to be laid to the footways and carriageway. New businesses Tapasya and Butler Whites have opened towards the junction of Humber Dock Street and their customers are already enjoying the new paving that has been laid in the area.

    Solar Gate

Plans for a bespoke timepiece sculpture in Queens Gardens were submitted for planning approval on 14 October.

If approved at planning Solar Gate would not only be a focal point within the city centre park, but also act as a sundial, highlighting key dates in the city's history that will be placed as discs of etched stainless steel and integrated with york stone paving earmarked for the area.

Solar Gate would also form part of the renovation of Queens Gardens, which will include a new grand central entrance through from the Rose Bowl. Work is scheduled to begin prior to Christmas, with completion planned in spring 2017. All other work to transform Queen's Gardens will begin in 2018 as part of the legacy programme.

    Ferens Art Gallery

The Ferens Art Gallery £4.5 million refurbishment project is well underway and will be complete in November ready for the art installation prior to the official opening in January 2017. Significant progress is being made across the whole building, key areas of development include the café extension, roof light replacement and basement lighting.

It has recently been announced Queen Victoria's spectacular jewel cabinet along with a number of priceless paintings and artefacts from the Royal Collection are to be loaned to the Ferens Art Gallery in 2017 from the Royal Collection and will reside at the gallery for five years.

    Hull New Theatre

Excellent progress is being made on the site and the project is on track to re-open late summer 2017. The extension work is taking shape with 530 metres of domestic water and heating installed, 60 tonnes of steelwork erected to the new fly tower structure and 519m3 of concrete used in the foundations to date.

Internal stairs between the new extension and the existing building have been installed and mechanical and electrical installations are continuing to the ground and first floor of the new extension.

    University Technical College (UTC)

Leader of Hull City Council, Councillor Stephen Brady, Alan Johnson MP for Hull West and Hessle and the College Principal Sarah Pashley gathered at an event on the 30 September to mark one year until the opening of the new Ron Dearing University Technical College.

Sponsors, partners and building contractors joined the initial visit to the site of Hull’s first University Technical College, celebrating the significant progress of the project and signing the steel with good luck messages.

In partnership with Esteem Consortium the Sewell Group is progressing the development on behalf of Hull City Council. With steelworks in the north block almost complete, Sewell's will then move on to the south block and new conference building linking the two blocks together.

Trinity Indoor Market open for business while stalls relocate to the mall area

Work will soon begin on the £1.6m refurbishment of Trinity Indoor Market with the Trinity House Lane entrance now closed.

Existing stalls from the food hall have already moved to the mall area and shoppers are being encouraged to use the entrances at Lowgate and Hepworth’s Arcade for the duration of the project. New signage directing people to the alternative entrances has been installed around the market and arcade.

Market customers are also being offered the chance to win a hamper of Trinity Market goodies as a thank you for their support during the project. Customers currently shopping at the market are given a postcard which they simply present at the stall’s new locations within the mall area to be automatically entered into a draw.

ANCHOR: A new Next outlet will open in Princes Quay, Hull

Next is set to open a new store in Hull's Princes Quay shopping centre. The fashion retailer is set to become the main anchor of a new-look £20m outlet development inside the Quay.

Other well-known retailers who have already signed up to open outlet stores at the centre include Bench, Ben Sherman and Sole Trader.

The Next store will occupy an 11,000 sq ft unit on what will be known as the centre's Outlet Deck and is expected to open next Easter. The retailer already has a flagship store in the St Stephen's shopping centre and will soon open a new £12m Next home and garden centre in Kingswood.

Overall, 24 new outlet brands will occupy the Outlet Deck. Like the Next store, most are expected to open by Easter and will include more fashion retailers as well as homeware and leisure names.

FIRST LOOK: How the new Princes Quay outlet will look.
Princes Quay centre manager Claire Suggitt said: "This is a hugely exciting announcement. After many months of planning and negotiations we are able to say that work is starting on the outlet mall re-modelling and refurbishment of the rest of the centre immediately.

"It's the first time that high street and outlet stores have been brought together under one roof and it will give shoppers a wider choice of fashion brands with greater savings without having to travel further afield.

"It's an exciting time for the city and Princes Quay will be central to the city's regeneration, being right in the heart of the public realm works, going into our year in the spotlight as the UK City of Culture."

The facelift will also include the development of seven new café and restaurant units on the current harbour deck. New lighting, signage and revamped entrances will also form part of the biggest change in the shopping centre's 25-year history.

The move to create a new outlet mall has been masterminded by commercial property specialists Realm. They were appointed by the Quay's owners Jadwa Investment last year to oversee the revamp.

Colin Brooks, managing director of Realm, said the outlet extension could become a blueprint for secondary shopping centres throughout the country.

He said: "If this is successful and delivers the anticipated footfall increases we are expecting, it could be an interesting model for urban regeneration elsewhere."

Mr Brooks said: "Princes Quay is right in the heart of the city centre so it's in a location that is already thriving and has very high footfall.

"When we were first asked to look at it we weren't sure what we were going to do but it quickly became clear to us that the centre needed something different.

"Having secured the pre-lets and carried out market research in the city, we are confident that this is going to be a success.

"The idea was to get new retailers into Hull and we are attracting retailers who wouldn't necessarily take a full-price store here but are happy to do an outlet."

I hadn't realised Ferens Art Gallery was due to re-open so soon, I had the idea it was 2018.

I'm still not entirely clear on what constitues an outlet store.

Will this Next be cheaper than the one in St Stephens because it's an 'outlet'?

    I think so
Its usually not selling the same stuff though because the outlets tend to mostly gather the unsold stock from lots of stores and flog it slightly out of season etc

    I think

Yes., they generally sell stuff around 50% cheaper than the normal stores (though it's not the same stuff obviously, it's generally old seasons stuff, or bought in for the outlets).
