The comment was not a reflection on Ronson, who was an excellent guitarist, but Bowie's use people and dump them attitude. A backing band was the way he regarded and treated them.
He did Trevor and Woody, but that wasn't the case with Ronson, who he continued to work with for years.
What's the point in taking a negative view of CoC? It's happening anyway. If you want it to be a success, then do something to make it a success, even if that only means going to as many events as you can. If you want to be negative about CoC, then you run the risk of actively wanting it to fail, just so you can say you told us so and you were right all along. In which case you and I have nothing to discuss.
Labour Party Confernece in Lpool this year Labour Party Conference 2017 ....why not have it in Hull? Labour council, 3 Labour MPs, Northern city needing regeneration ?
Because it's in Brighton and we don't currently have a large conference centre, or enough hotel rooms either.
I was playing Devil's Advocate, as I am fully aware these things need organising well in advance. But maybe Labour ought to put its money where its mouth is at some stage as regards this city?
To get the projected 1 million visitors it needs 2,700 a day. If this happens not many could stop more than one night given there are about 2,000 hotel rooms. One of the reasons Hull wasn't considered as a World Cup Venue probably. Along with Humberside Police's inability to deal with smaller numbers of visiting fans than a World Cup would bring without going into a meltdown.
Sadly, the two new large hotels expected haven't been built and it is an issue. I believe the new Hilton is still expected to open at some point in 2017 (though I'm not convinced) and the other looks to be dead in the water.
Nothing to moan about its going to put Hull in the spotlight both nationaly and beyond as it already as. The City centre is getting redeveloped and the jewell in the crown the Marina and Old Town are starting to look resplendent.
However much I'm proud/excited for COC, am I the only one that enjoyed everyone thinking Hull was ****? With all these projected visitors and the positive national press coverage, what are we all going to do when people ask us where we're from? Usually the word "Hull" is followed by someone pulling a face or telling a joke. The press normally print negative stories about the city.... all of this is then followed by most of us getting defensive about the area and highlighting all the positives and trying to convince people it really isn't that bad. If everyone starts to fall in love with the place, I'm really going to miss my regular speeches on why Hull isn't ****.
Thanks for posting this Quill. I hadn't spotted anything about the John Williams concert but saw this and quickly bought tickets. The website was absolutely ****ed due to demand all of Friday but I popped in to get some Friday lunchtime and there was only the back row left, or the upstairs areas. Sounded like it was really full already. I'm not a massive film or music buff like you and some others on here are, but as you know I'm a big Star Wars fan, and the music is a big part of it for me. I find it amazing that Williams is responsible for so many of the most iconic film scores. Star Wars, Indiana Jones, Jurassic Park, ET, Jaws and Harry Potter. I find that an absolutely incredible list and there's obviously more that he's done too. As I've mentioned before I like the Star Wars prequels even though most fans don't, and I think some of the music in Episodes 2 and 3 in particular is amazing. I find it really powerful how it accompanies the significance of events in Episode 3, and the sadness of the fall of the Republic and the Jedi, the deaths of major characters and the fact that, for several years at least, it was the conclusion of the whole saga. This part is one of the most powerful for me, when it gets going about 1:45 - I'm really looking forward to the concert even though if it wasn't Williams, I wouldn't have considered it.
The soundtracks are probably the only good thing about the prequels. Think I've got an upstairs seat, near the back.
