‘We want promotion and Hull-born XI playing for Hull United’ – new chairman Ian Ashbee

NEW ROLE: Hull City legend Ian Ashbee is Hull United's new chairman

IAN Ashbee won't settle for anything less than promotion this season after becoming Hull

    United's new chairman.

The 38-year-old is used to promotions, having captained Hull City from the bottom tier to the Premier League during his nine years at the KC Stadium.

Ashbee takes over as chairman from owner Jamie Walton and has set his sights on winning promotion from the Northern Counties East Division One to NCEL Premier League alongside Bridlington Town

    .

Ashbee's goal of reaching the Conference North is shared by the club and was one of the factors in him adding the role of chairman to assisting manager Curtis Woodhouse.

Asked what his goals are for the new season, Ashbee simply replied: "Promotion," with the same conviction as one of the tackles he made his living from as a player. "There is nothing else on my mind and I expect us to be promoted this season.

"I won't settle or rest until we get promoted.

"We have a five-year plan at the club to get to where North Ferriby United are now. People may laugh at that but there is a good vibe around the club.

"I'm not into being part of something just for the sake of it.

"I want to see something good happen for the community.

"This is a great project and Curtis and I are ambitious. We want to achieve things and we will with the experience we have between us."

Only three years ago, Ashbee was playing in the league football and thought a career in management or coaching lay ahead.

However, the chance to be chairman of a club with ambitious plans was too good to miss.

"After 20 years as a player it feels strange to be a chairman," Ashbee said.

"I thought I'd go into management or coaching but never thought I'd go into that type of role in football.

"There is a lot of pressure on a chairman, but I love the pressure, as I did as a player, it made me think quicker and a stronger person. It's a good step for me to see how things work behind the scenes.

"The experience of being a player will hold me in good stead, understanding how it works from the bottom to the top.

"I need to learn more about the business side of the game.

"When you play you think you know about it but it's a lot harder than it is.

"You are the face of the football club and it will be different and difficult for me."

Ashbee is grateful for a career that took him to the Premier League with the Tigers

and now wants to provide local talent with the same opportunities he was given when starting out.

    "Giving local

players a chance is what it's all about," Ashbee said.

"There is a lot of talent in Hull and we will be exploring all avenues. We have signed a few good local players.

"We don't want them travelling to Bridlington and Scarborough. I know we are in a lower league but our ambition is to get a Hull born XI playing for Hull United

Ash requested a pre-season with City, but the offer was declined.

Any who, they certainly know how to make all the right noises do United.

    They're not for me though.

The glorified pub team won 5-0 today.

Of their 6 friendlies they've won 5 and drawn 1, playing against teams from higher leagues in 5 of the 6. They've got a hell of a team for the NCEL.

Not sure if this is a joke that's gone over my head or something, but Ashbee doesn't seem at all interested in playing. He joined United as a player-assistant manager but hasn't ever played a game. He's now chairman-assistant manager.

My understanding is that it happened when he started his new job, he was that enthusiastic that he strapped a dozen watches onto his right wrist, totally stopping the blood flow and thereby turning it into summat resembling an elephants foot. He's still receiving treatment for it, hence the real reason that he's never played a game yet for United.

If OLM had said that Ash had requested a pre-season friendly with City, I'd have assumed it was against Hull United.

As it was written, it sounds like Ash wanted to train with City during pre-season.

Clearly I've not got a knack for this message board lark.
