I remember seeing Elvis Costello at the Nashville - didn't know it was originally a C&W venue. My favourite haunt of the 80s, the Mean Fiddler in Harlesden, started that way too. The Harlesden club is no longer there, but there was one opened in Charing Cross Road. http://www.remotegoat.com/uk/venue/20840/mean-fiddler/ We used to go and see a lot of bands at the Windsor Castle on the Harrow Road in the 70s. Not sure if that's still there.
On that theme the Railway Hotel in Wealdstone was a great place for r'n'b in the 60s and 70s. The Who had a residency there (before my time). Was vacant by the mid nineties and then burnt down. Now 4 blocks of flats on the site, each named for a member of the Who. Is the original Mean Fiddler still going*? I used to love the 100 Club too, is that still alive? *cheers Strolls, how did you guess my question before I had written it?
I lived on Grittleton Road ( well more like squatted in a mates flat) off Elgin Avenue for a time in the 80s ( can't quite remember when, it's a bit of a haze). The Windsor Castle was definitely still functioning then. I think Strummer's pre Clash band the 101ers played there. Truscott Arms was a regular haunt,
Doesn't ring any bells with me but I'll Google it, there aren't many pubs in the neighbourhood I didn't go in!
There was a Mean Fiddler in Paris for a while, so we had to check it out whilst we were there for the racing. Not the same. I think I read that he wanted to open one in New York, but I'm not sure if that happened.
Part of one of the best pub crawls....start at the pub on Hammersmith Bridge, then The Blue Anchor, served a lovely pint of IPA in there, then onto the bar a couple of doors along from there, can't remember the name but used to play Bar Billiards in there, then The Dove followed by another one that turned into a Gastro Pub, then Black Lion, before finishing by the Fullers Brewery........extremely pished.....
It won't mean much to you guys since its outside of London but The Rose and Crown in Congleton was where I grew up drinking. It was a proper pub, with lock ins, smoking indoors (!) , pool tables, jukeboxes and darts and held many a happy memory for me. Its where I met my Wife to be 15 years ago so by default is responsible for the birth of my two kids, the landlady was a diamond who saw all us 20 or so lads and lasses as her "children" and overlooked our various discrepancies even returning our "dodgy" cigarettes when they were left discarded in the pub after a late night sesh. It was knocked down about 3 years ago to become flats, and I'm not ashamed to say it bought a tear to my eye and a little piece of me died the day the place was levelled :- This was it on the right before
I'd forgotten about the Blue Anchor, used to go there too. Tramore, we really should reenact your pub crawl!
Did you ever go to the Windsor Castle in Lanark Place? I used to spend most weekday evenings in there with a good friend of mine as I fancied the landlord's daughter something rotten! I'm amazed it's still there. We used to call it the Matchbox as it's the smallest pub I've ever been in
Hammersmith Broadway 1st business on king St I think it was turned into an edwards pub Was a great pub Ran by a great bloke called Seamus (I think..memory's going) Big gang of Irish boys in one part Office workers in the rest Went out with one of the barmaids for a while Seamus would have killed me had he known she was sneaking me upstairs after hours
Ah now I remember it..........ended up in there on my stag night......we started in the Fullers pub opposite the Odeon underneath the Flyover and someone then decided it was a good idea to end up with a few pints of Guinness in the Swan.........not the wisest of moves as one of the barmaids lived downstairs from us and had the misfortune to clear up the mess if you get my drift..........Fullers and Guinness didn't mix
The Narrow Boat on the Grand Union canal at the top of Ladbroke Grove used to be a favourite - now long gone. There was a spiral staircase down to the gents which was very tricky after a few beers.
I know that pub. They used to serve real ale. They had a board up on the wall for the heroes who managed to do the 10. You had to tell the guvnor in advance and drink a pint of each ale working in sequence. You weren't allowed to chuck up or leave the pub until you had drunk the 10 pints. I didn't try it!
that's the one and not all this all day malarkey. You had to do it in the old 7 pm to 11 pm evening slot. Great pub. Just had a quick look on their web page, like all the rest, more a restaurant than a pub, sigh
