Oxford and Cambridge further up Hammersmith Bridge Road has gone now - used to be run by a bald Irishman with a bushy beard known as the Mad Monk. Had a few down the river in the Blue Anchor and Rutland prior to the Swansea game when we lost 0-5 - it was a lovely Summer's day and was really looking forward to the season. Haven't been back since (nor has my optimism come to think of it), but agree with Tramore it's a good pub crawl along the river.
Not too far from it. It may of been a satellite of the main Osram building though. The main Osram building is now a Tesco's and a block of flats.
I hear that the giant M&S at Tolworth Is closing and Harvey's of Lewes are opening a mega ale pub 3 acres of floor space selling beers only like the famous Trouser Nipple
I think it's still there, but I was a Ballot Box regular before they ****ed it up. Real spit n sawdust. Proper pub back then.
Anyone remember the 'Goose & Firkin' in Southwark? Bruce's Brewery was at the back of the pub producing the lovely velvety 'Dogbolter' and the pub was packed out with young nurses from the nearby Guy's Hospital, making it the ideal Friday night pub of choice. The Firkin chain spread across London before it was bought out and eventually disappeared after a number of takeovers. Allied, in particular, saw it's demise...
Remember the Frog and Firkin in Westbourne Grove just beside the train line into Paddington......micro brewery on site, packed whenever I went there arond the ntime when CAMRA was taking off in an attempt to get drinkers away from the fizzy pop of Watneys......
Tramore did you end your pub crawl in the pub with two names attached to Fullers brewery or the George and Devonshire the other side of Brewery on Hogarth Roundabout? I worked at the offices on the roundabout for many years and we used to do the same river pub crawl but in the opposite direction ending up in a the Dove. We probably passed each other on the way up and down the river.
Good, morphing into a thread about extant high quality boozers. I would exclude from this list gastro pubs, not because I don't like eating in them (had an excellent lunch in the Flowing Well in Sunningwell near Abingdon last weekend, sure Col knows it) but because they are more restaurant than pub, can't imagine going in for a couple of pints and a chat. They seem to dominate pretty villages now, wonder where the locals go just for a booze up? The Somerville Arms in Leamington Spa is excellent, Everards beer plus guests, often live (acoustic) music - blue grass last time I was there. Also the Woodland Tavern, old style with public and saloon bars. Let's try and find an acceptable boozer for as many towns (UK or abroad, no exclusions here) as we can. Then someone more tech savvy than me can design the Discerning QPR Supporters' Drinking Guide to the Universe app, so we need never fear visiting a new place again! Leamington Spa done Edinburgh/Leith done above (Volunteer Arms, Anfield Arms) Holborn - Princess Louise Durham - The Dun Cow Carmel Indiana - The Union Brew Co Indianapolis - The Rathskeller (lot of sausage as well as beer, and as we all know encased meat is the food of the Gods) Kenilworth - The Virgins and Castle Roll up, roll up, the more the better. My problem is that I have been in a lot of excellent boozers in a lot of places, but I can't remember their names. Or locations. I wonder why?
Cate as far as i can remember we only got as far as the first one, the walk across the front of the brewery to the other one tended to be a walk too far.......mind I did get to the other one on several occasions, it was always a comfortable bar. Actually had to Google the pub that came after the Dove and before the Black Lion as I couldn't remember the name of it, turns out it's The Old Ship.....
I've got something to keep you happy, tech and fishing what could be better www.fishspy.com My wife drew it to my attention. Over 25 years together she had failed to spot that I had never left the house saying 'I'm going fishing', shown any interest in fishing, or even mentioned the subject. Actually doesn't this defeat the point? I thought the skill lies in picking the right spot and the pleasure in the Zen like calm of waiting for something which may never happen. Outside. In nature. With your ****ing phone turned off. I've made it sound quite attractive to myself.
Which one, Isleworth or Shoreditch? Surely not the latter..... Richmond - White Cross Hotel, The Roebuck
