He is a quality player though. There's a handful of players around midtable clubs who could perform in the Champions League, and some like him who already have!
If we can't afford it then fine don't get him, we have to operate within our means and there's only a small percentage of fans who would be willing to risk it. I suspect though we will end up spending £50m this window without really buying any stand out players and I'd prefer to have bought 2 or 3 proven quality players with the same money. Realistically he wouldn't have come to us but if we're just talking about the money I think he is worth more than twice our new winger.
We're at a real disadvantage having being relegated in the season we were. Straight back up, sure, but most of our competitors have the benefit of big money from the new TV deal and we are having to watch what we spend. Probably looking at £15m tops for any signings. I mean, at one time that would buy you Alan Shearer but now it buys you a Championship player if you're lucky. We just need to get through this season still in the league and we will have a better chance of buying the real quality to climb the league next year.
So he's officially signed then. £10m. Have to say it's a bonus that he's a supporter from an early age and has family in the area. None of the usual commitment and settling in issues. I think he could be a good player for us. Opportunity has knocked and it's all there in front him for the taking.
When is the last time we had a healthy winger with real pace? Rafa has brought in atsu and this kid. Possibly ojo. That pace outlet is a difference maker.
Rafa loves pace. If people aren't blown away by this appointment then it's worth considering that he has replaced Gouffran. Got to be an improvement.
I think he's a great signing on the face of it. Young, England International, toon fan, fast, not sulky! We would have not signed anyone like thisbin recent years before Rafa came. This is the kind of player I want to see out there and be able to support.
