We had been to see City play at Brentford that day, sat in an old wooden stand.......a very sad and scary day. I seem to recall stopping off at services on the way back and coming across LUFC fans full of themselves after smashing up seats at St. Andrews. What a contrast.
Good lad. Pity this thread has so few replies while the rubbishing of Roko goes on and on. Alittle reminder of who he is.
I went that day to brentford on minibus and the cops tried to stop us filling up with petrol near Birmingham they told us about the Bradford fire and about the white ****e fans indeed a contrast! was that the day one fan got killed at Birmingham falling off a high wall?
I only know him from being my mums antiques dealer as he played before my time, a decent chap for sure
One of my favourite players in the mid seventies. He played as an amateur for several years. He was a bloody good footballer too as the Sunderland video demonstrates.
I remember someone posting a vid of the fire a year or two back. Amazing how quickly it spread WARNING: VIDEO NOT FOR THE FAINT OF HEART! (contains people on fire)
Initially they tried to blame it on the fans I believe. Then the truth came out about rubbish being swept under the stand for years and years.
if i remember right john hawley scored a class goal for city v sunderland at bootherry park wealands threw it to him on the halfway line he conrolled and hit from there and went in great goal
Hawley's antique shop is just up the street from the Beverley market...not far from St.Mary's church. I remember being in that Bradford stand with my wife watching them play City not long before the fire and it was a decrepit old wooden structure with loads of papers under the seats. We commented how vulnerable it was for a fire...little did we know. Well done John.!!
For anyone who missed it... http://www.bbc.co.uk/iplayer/episode/b03q8my2/Real_Lives_Reunited_Episode_6/ Well done John.
