The national Daily Mail did a write up a few years ago about the last amateur player to score in the professional game and they claimed it was an Orient player in the 1920's. I wrote and told them about John Hawley playing for Hull City, not once as an amateur but loads of times and scoring. To be fair they retracted the story and credited Hawley and City. His goal v Sunderland at Boothferry Park was a spectacular goal, quite special, and very memorable. John Hawley in his prime was a fabulous player.
