I think Harry is potentially better than John Stones. More about him. I'll be amazed if Liverpool aren't looking at him - they are **** in defence and he is EXACTLY the type of defender Klopp has preferred in the past (Hummels at Borussia) a defender who can carry the ball out of defence. I'd like us to offer him an improved deal just so that when we do sell him we get market value for a decent English centre half. I genuinely think once he breaks into the England squad he'll go on to become a key figure. He's got everything and I think he'll look even better surrounded by better players.
He fits the style of play and the sort of defender Klopp desperately needs. How much did Stones go to Citeh for?
The thing that gets with me Stones is it wasn't even hindsight. There have been 2 transfers of English born players in recent times that have looked ridiculous to me - Shaw and Stones - and nothing has made me think otherwise for even a second.
Stones has looked ok on the odd time I've watched a game he's played - but nothing special. Which is why I think Maguire can be much better.
I don't get this Maguire love in, I really don't. He plays for a team with the worst defensive recored in the Premier League. He's error prone. He regularly mis-times tackles. He's apt to set off on long aimless runs to nowhere which leave him way out of position when he inevitably loses the ball. He hits hopelessly optimistic shots which are never on target. He never scores. He looks scruffy. Please feel free to forward these comments on to any team which is considering putting a bid in for him.
Totally agree. Positional play is iffy too. He had half a dozen good games, stands out because of his moving forward, but nothing ever comes of it. He has tidied up his defending (which is what he is paid for) and with defenders at City now, could learn a hell of a lot and continue the progress he has made the last 6 months
He can be good, but the hyping of people to the skies here is a regular occurrence. Robertson last season, Davies at the start of this.
I don't agree with the comments above. Our defence is **** for many reasons and Maguire isn't one of those reasons. Firstly, we haven't had a settled back 4/5 all season. Centre backs Davies in and out, Dawson in and out. New boys Frog and Elab in and out with Elmo. We've also had to contend with Marshall in goal for the lions share of those goals we have conceded. Harry is a great prospect, he's very young still, but he's also very, very talented. I am genuinely surprised that some of you need this pointing out? He's also English, which given the way he plays this is genuinely astonishing. His style of play is very much of the moment in that he can carry the ball out of defence, comfortably. He can pass a ball well - it doesn't always come off - but I'd say he generally has more success than failure. The FA blueprint of in possession out of possession and what you do in the transition - is well suited to the style of play you get from Maguire. Look at the people to praise him recently Silva really rates him as does the Frog. It's no coincidence his stats support all the hysteria currently surrounding Maguire. Celebrate the fact we have a very talented player on our books that could well go on to be a mainstay in that England squad. He's also in quite a few games been our best attacking threat - from centre half - that tells you where we are at in terms of squad depth and quality.
I reckon Everton/Southampton would be the best place for him. Southampton have sold Fonte and may be selling Ol' Virgil and Jagielka isn't getting younger and Funes Mori is getting ****ter. I don't think he's good enough for Liverpool. It would be good to see him in an established top half team.
Harry's an excellent defender and he is good with the ball at his feet, but in the past month his final ball has been appalling.
That's not down to a lack of ability though. It's probably overconfidence because he knows he is such a good passer. He's trying to thread it through all the time when maybe he should *gasp* play it sideways instead at times.
