Hartlepool though? How the mighty have fallen.

Like Jay, if he gets it I hope he is successful apart from when they play Newport.

442 - fold the arms and let the players get on with it - good luck Hartlepool.

Andy Campbell slags him right off today.

If Jones had had a half decent defence then City would have gone up years before they did. We could score goals for fun back then but couldn't as DJ said "keep the back door shut."

The only thing Andy Campbell did for us was score that goal. DJ split opinions, but for me he's one of the best managers I've seen at the club.

What did Butch Dingle ever do for us, apart from the Play Off goal that is? <whistle>

Best manager other than Warnock we've had in the past 10 years, played attractive football on a tiny budget while managing to sign some amazing players. good luck Hartlepool you've got a cracking manager on your hands.

I was at that play off game. May have been a little worse for wear but don't remember the goal being an audacious lob as the article suggests. Didn't he shin it?

Better than I remembered and still gives me goose bumps! Great scenes at the end.

Haha, I went down when I was around 6 to my first match, against Scunthorpe, I think we were in the old division 2 at the time. I've never seen a 4th flight City (touch wood).

Back to the "Jonesy" bit. I've lived through and watched all the City managers since Scoular in the late 60's - albeit I was only a sprog back then.....<laugh>

Loved Len Ashurst and Eddie May and hated our times under the likes of Durban and Osman. I'm not going to argue about how good or bad each was, but as far as watching entertaining (and that doesn't just mean winning) football is concerned, Dave Jones was amongst those who provided it.

Unlike recent encumbents like Slade, Trollope and yes, even Malky, you never knew what sort of game you were in for. You could win 6-0 like against the Wurzels or lose 6-0 like against Preston. He was the archetypal 4-4-2 man but by bringing the likes of Bothroyd, Chopra and McCormack to the club against a backdrop of difficult financial times, we were treated to some great stuff to enjoy on the pitch whilst worrying about the other stuff off it.

Mind you, he bought a few turkeys as well and they've been listed on here plenty of times since so I wont bother now. <laugh>

It's also a myth that he didn't have any money to spend - he had plenty compared to some other Championship sides at the time. OK, nothing like that provided by Tan to Malky and Ole, but nevertheless he did a decent job but without being able to get us over the line in the end.

His time was up and I wasn't exactly distraught when he went, but in a funny sort of way, I've missed that sort of football since.
