Just read a little factoid...George Lucas thought Close Encounters of the Third Kind would be a bigger hit than Star Wars, so he exchanged 2.5% of the franchise with Speilberg for 2.5% of Close Encounters as a bet. Speilberg still raking in the money (not that he needs it). Reminds me how Agatha Christie shared out her work amongst friends and family...one fringe relative got the rights to one play....luckily it was The Mousetrap.
That Trophy was apparently bought by a Harvard student (called Davis) in 1899 for £1K....can you imagine how much that was worth then!!! Clever design....if it fills up you can add another tier.
So if GB Davis Cup team are Team of the Year, who are your choices for the individual award and overseas one? Mine would be Mo Farah by a country wide 10,000 metres, and Dan Carter, Serena Williams or Djoko for the overseas one. All three merit the recognition.
When I used to live in the UK, I loved taking a trip at this time of the year across the Channel to France for one of these 24 hour trips. A few years ago, I took up a Brittany Ferries offer and went to St Malo on the Friday evening aboard the Pont Aven, returning to Portsmouth on a Sunday morning. For those who may know St Malo the most interesting part it that surrounded by the old historic walls where you can find the museums, shops, interesting bars ("le bar au coin" is well worth a visit), and delightful restaurants and cafes. If you have a car and the tide is low a trip to nearby Mont St Michel is worthwhile. Further along the coast and easily accessible from Le Harve or Newhaven, Dieppe is great to visit for its "Herring Festival." Here in Mallorca there are numerous markets to visit every Sunday and at this time of the year are very beautiful.
That is what I have been doing most of my life except I have been stuck down here. I'm not complaining mind.
ah ... I now fully understand where the term "God" coms from. From the ancient Greek hero Saint Goddersethus (enjoy that if you have a lisp), shortened in the early 30's to Godders due to his prime sexual activity at that time and eventually, just called the modern day "God" It all makes sense now.
