Newcastle's managing director, Lee Charnley, has now been arrested.

The riches and impact now of relegating a team for something like this far, far outweigh what they did in 1990. If west Ham were relegated or the Jawdies denied promotion it would be more trouble than it was worth.

In answer to your question, it shouldn't make a difference, but it does.

The HMRC were not raiding us this morning. They were merely checking if we were paying the right amount of sick pay to Andy Carroll. dg

Anyone who thinks the PL will do anything to keep a club out of the PL who will have a 52,000 home crowd and sell out their full away allocation every time is living in a dream world.

Precisely. It's wrong, but it's the reality.

My guess is that if they say it is national insurance fraud it is down to the clubs claiming that too much of the money paid to the players is image rights rather than employment. Image rights isn't subject to NIC whereas wages is.

What are the taxes they should pay?

None of the companies you mentioned are doing anything illegal with their tax management.

if the £5m relates to NIC fraud then it may have an impact on PAYE that should have been deducted which would be much more.

This fraud case could be at the final stages (hence the arrests), or the beginning (arrest to prevent loss of Evidence).

Will be interesting to see PL reaction, they will need to show a positive response

    you are right
the problem is to do with related companies in tax havens that make charges - royalties, licences and interest - which reduce the tax bill in the UK but has little or no effect on tax on income in the tax havens
there was a programme on tv a while ago which explained how a lot of british people had normal jobs in these tax havens and paid no tax but the duty on imports meant that they would pay about £8 for the magazine "Hello"!

I could be being gullible and falling for a wum, but according to the Newcastle board...

The transfers of Cabella, Thauvin and Ben Arfa - NUFC to and from Marseilles are central to the investigation.
Transfer of Payet and Roman Amalfitano - West Ham to and from Marseilles
Transfer of Batshuayi to Chelsea from Marseilles.

We have been implicated in a much larger and far more sinister operation. Basically, the Corsican and Marseilles underworld have been involved with senior officials at Olympique Marseilles. As a direct result of our dealings with Marseilles - Ben Arfa, Cabella and Thauvin, we have been implicated and are being investigated by both French authorities and the HMRC. It is the French authorities that alerted HMRC.

The state of Charnley at 39 cheered up this out of condition 66 year old considerably. 39? Unbelievable.

A piece about that on the DM sports pages. Chelsea spoken to but no one arrested there.

Any chance of fat twat and the porn kings sharing the same cell?

Maybe they should share the same soap-on-a-rope as well.

They will be looking at City next. They must suspect them of fiddling figures as no one has ever got smaller gates in the PL than they got in League One.

I do find it amazing that city v swansea in division three had a bigger attendance than city v swansea in the premier league
