Eurosport have just agreed a €1.3bn deal for the pan-European rights to show the Olympics 2018-2024. The BBC already have the rights for the 2018(winter) and 2020(summer) Olympics, but may now be unable to broadcast the 2022(winter) and 2024(summer) Olympics.
I always thought the Olympics were on the protected schedule that meant they had to be shown on free-to-air TV. Along with the World Cup and several other major sporting events.
Yep. Though PPV channels can share live coverage. So that's what will happen. Barring a change in the regulations.
FIFA were challenging that rule weren't they? They were pissed that they don't make enough money selling the world cup rights in England because the rule favours the BBC and kills off any bidding war involving the likes of Sky.
In the UK the rights have to be free to air, but for it to work, the World Cup, Wimbledon, Olympics etc all have to play ball and some of them don't like the arrangement. Though the IOC have just said "Discovery & Eurosport’s coverage will be augmented by strong free-to-air access & innovative partnerships with broadcasters", so it looks like they will probably come to some sort of arrangement.
BBC Loses Olympic Games TV Rights From 2022 The BBC has lost the rights to show coverage of the Olympic Games from 2022 following a decision to award all European rights to the owner of Eurosport. Discovery Communications is paying the International Olympic Committee (IOC) £922m for all TV and multi-platform broadcast rights from 2018 to 2024, though the UK is not affected until 2022 because of existing contracts. The IOC said it would mean 700 million people across Europe receiving "more coverage across more screens than ever before." Its statement added that: "Discovery and Eurosport’s coverage will be augmented by strong free-to-air access and innovative partnerships with broadcasters and distributors to bring the Games to life like never before." Details of that access were yet to be announced. Discovery does not currently own a free-to-air terrestrial channel, meaning the door remained open to ITV, Channel 4, Channel 5 and the BBC to secure some rights. The announcement marked a huge change in the rights process, which had previously been done by country. The IOC's new Europe-wide agreement covers the 2018 Winter Games in Pyeongchang, South Korea and the 2020 Olympics in Tokyo. The UK would be affected from the 2022 Winter Games and the 2024 Summer Olympics, which are yet to be awarded to bid nations. http://news.sky.com/story/1510265/bbc-loses-olympic-games-tv-rights-from-2022
At this rate, the Government is going to have to start to question the validity of such an organisation as the BBC.
Eurosport ? wasn't that the free channel that only showed "bearded lady cycling" , "Pickle Jar Wrestling" "Amish Tree felling championships" and Ferret racing from Chepstow" i take it , its a subscription channel these days
Bits of extra info I know: The Olympics are a listed event. Discovery have to either show it for free or sub-license it to the BBC (the latter is currently favoured). Showing it free is a little more difficult as they cannot uncrypt one of their channels as it won't reach enough viewers to comply with OFCOM - their option is to use Quest and Quest +1 but will have too many live events for two channels which don't have a red button/online service. Subletting is also expected in France and Germany. RTE have lost the rights in Ireland which they've held for some time. The Olympic Games are a listed event but it isn't clear how much is listed (I.e the whole thing doesn't necessarily have to be shown free but how much does?)
