Ive been bring stuff back from storage after work on the house and rummaging through boxes. I found these. There's a really old World of Football card book and my Mum's (RIP) old World of Football collection books. I believe this was a weekly collectable that you bought and then put the pullout into the black folders shown below. I have conveniently opened one on a Terry Paine article. Excuse the indulgence but I thought a few old'uns may like to see them. I'll post spectate pictures.
Great collection FLT, and lovely pictures of one of my favourite Saints lineups. Micky looks about 12, and Stokesy must only be 8!
My brother went to school with Bobby Stokes and played in the school team with him. Described him as a nice quiet lad.
So in 1961 Terry Paine demanded a move (even though he didn't get it). So much for player power being a modern development.
Not sure you can read it but if you can zoom in on the writing about Terry Paine, it mentions a transfer showdown with the club and him demanding a move. Arsenal bid 35,000 but this was 10,000 below Saints asking price so he stayed and came off the list. Hear that Vic?
Ha. It also seems part-owning a furniture business stops players moving. Maybe we should buy Wanyama and Mane some DFS shares? But my favourite bit has to be "the Southampton directors had irrevocably decided that if the club were to progress then it would not be possible without their ablest player" Perhaps you could send a copy of this article to the current board?
Tomorrow I'll post a photo up of the other side of the article. One of the books has a Ron Davies article too.
Nice memorabilia from my initial following of Saints. Dad had a season ticket for the stands and I went into the Boys Section. Favorites were always Paine, Sydenham and Derek Reeves.
Jeez, I was about to say Eric Martin was no looker, but on reflection this may have been the ugliest Saint's line up ever. No wonder Paine stayed - that lot made him look like a matinee idol (which I'm sure he thought he was).
Saved all the photos FLT. Thanks for posting them. We can always rotate the one that went a bit skewed.
When I have a minute/hour I'll go through the volumes and pull out some of the other stuff on Saints. There is definitely a Ron Davies article in one of them.
I still have the programme from the Scotland-England game in 1974 - Mick Channon was playing for Southampton Town, apparently.
