Watching the Swansea v Leicester game yesterday left me thinking that quite a few cash-rich clubs dodged a bullet last summer. Very silly money was being talked about Jamie Vardy, Mahrez and Danny Drinkwater. It seems increasingly obvious that all 3 and a few more besides punched above their weight last season. Vardy looks a very average player all of a sudden, and Arsenal wanted to pay him 100 grand a week and Leicester over £20m for his services. Can anyone think of One Season Wonders we have had at Charlton? Neil Redfearn - a candidate for Player of the Year at Barnsley. Curbs signed him that summer for £1m, yet he was abysmal for us. Going back to the 80s - Steve MacKenzie. A million pound teenager for Man City, but resembled a hod carrier when we signed him before suddenly morphing into a top class Div1 player. How about Nicky Bailey in more recent years ? One great season for us - then injuries and too many beers took their toll.
Well, look at the list of players we have signed under Roland... Pretty sure he signed the likes of Polish Pete, Igor, Tony Watt, etc., on the basis of having a good season.
I mean players who actually had reputations or had actually achieved something before joining us. Ignore the Duchatelet era in this thread.
Luke Varney. Pardew signed him for silly money fro m Crewe I think. He couldn't hit a cows arse with a banjo up front for us. Didn't do much when he left us either.
Where did he have a good one season Another awful journeyman pro. Just thought of a genuine one - Izale McLeod Filled his boots for MKD - filled his pants for us
Anyone else remember John Pearson in our 84-85 promotion year ? Signed from Sheff Wed, and was decent for us upfront in our promotion run in Let loose next season in the top flight, he struggled like Reams at Weightwatchers.
At least Varney destroyed Warnock's Palace for us. A Friday night if my memory serves... Franny Jeffers.
i think he had a really good game to goal ratio there.. carl leaburn? one good season saw him get the move to wimbledon?
The only "wonder" about Carl Leaburn was that he earned a living as a footballer. He would have got absolutely slaughtered in the modern era on social media.
