That's really sad. RIP Dave "Docker" Walker. <rose>

Like some of those on the Saintsweb thread I remember him from my very first visit to the Dell in August 1966 for the Man City game. A true Saints legend from the "alehouse football" era. When Docker tackled you, you stayed tackled.

I read that and wish the club had said something along the lines of "We've just reduced this season's, so haven't looed at the year after yet"

If he plays a match before his court case I'll be very surprised.

Why bother lifting his suspension then?

It had already been lifted before he was charged. What I'm suggesting is that he'll get a reception nobody would want, from people who will have already made up their minds about him.

That may seem as if I have already made up my mind about him. I haven't because I'm not like that. But people are often cynical and quick to judgement, especially in a crowd.

I agree with your final sentence wholeheartedly, but what I'm saying is should never have u-turned in the first place, so being arrested was enough cause for suspension but being formally charged isn't?

Just seems very unprofessional to me, if he was a Saints player would you be happy with they it's been handled by board level?

FWIW I think he will play some part in remaining games, imagine if he scores some vital goals to keep them up and then is found guilty on all 3 charges.

Yeah, his career is done regardless of the trial outcome. In the public eye unfortunately being charged is as good as being guilty and any other outcome is the result of bribery/intimidation/expensive lawyery tricks. I really hate controversies like this because the the trial and verdict seems an afterthought to people either pursuing or blindly defending the accused regardless of guilt or possible damage to people involved.

Don't get me wrong...if he's guilty he deserves every punishment he gets and more but i think he's done career wise regardless of the courts decision.

Oh, I see the point you've made. Yes, I agree, Sunderland probably should have waited before lifting Johnson's suspension. Possibly they thought the case would come to nothing. Possibly they needed him that badly that they left principle behind. I don't know, but I agree that they did seem to act unwisely.

They've done it arse about face. They could have backed him upon arrest (nothing wrong with supporting him) and then maybe suspended him upon charge (even though that doesn't mean he is guilty). If he is guilty, he can sink to the bottom of the human race pile.

We had a similar problem with Dave Jones...what are you supposed to do in these situations where guilt has not been proven. Eventually Jones was given gardening leave in order to let him concentrate on his case (as they said). Later, he spoke off his horror at this because he felt the club weren't sure of his innocence. However, letting him carry on as usual would suggest the club didn't take the charges seriously and insult the victim further (if he was found guilty). As it happened it was complete fabrication....but not an easy situation to get right.

Ever read Dave Jones book Fran? It's a tough read when he talks about that case and when it came out while he was at Saints.
