Cheers Dave. Including the Champions League, Europa League, the European Cup, Cup Winners Cup and the old Eufa Cup, which are the only 2 clubs to have reached European semi finals whilst not being in the top division of their respective countries ?
I'm guessing that one of them is a Welsh club from the days when they could still play in the Welsh Cup despite playing league football in England, so I'm going for Newport. I can't remember if Juventus received a European ban when they were stripped of their titles and demoted, so they're my other one.
A good guess, but Newport only got as far as the quarter final stage of the Cup Winners Cup. Juventus didn't play in Europe when they were demoted. Not so very far away though.
To recap. The 2 second division clubs who have got the furthest in European competitions. Both reaching the semi final stage. One of them has a link to a type of orange.
I'm sure Cardiff got to the semis of the Cup Winners Cup back in the sixties - but oranges from Cologne has me stumped...
Just trawling through the Cup Winners Cup records, I notice that Atalanta were in Serie B in 1987/88 and reached the semis that same year. What that has to do with oranges from Cologne is beyond me though...
You have half of it BB. Cardiff got to the semis in season 66/67 where they lost I'll give it to you BB. The 2 clubs were Cardiff and Atalanta Bergamo. Bergamo lends its name to the Bergamot orange, which was first brought back to that town by Columbus. Bergamot orange oil is one of the most important ingredients of Eau de Cologne - which was the 'Cologne product' I was talking about. Bergamo were in the semis against Mechelen in the mid 80s, whilst being in Serie B.
The 2015 earthquake in Nepal has prompted scientists to plan to repeat something last done 60 years previously in 1955. What are they planning?
