Liverpool transfer news: £15m Charlie Austin on Rodgers' wish-list as QPR eye cut-price Lambert as replacement

    Simon Johnson
    Wednesday 27 May 2015

QPR are considering making a bid for Liverpool and England striker Rickie Lambert.

Rangers have started planning for the Championship without top scorer Charlie Austin, even though they have not given up on convincing him to stay and help their bid for an immediate return to the top flight.

Austin scored 18 Premier League goals and has attracted interest from Newcastle, Crystal Palace and Southampton.

Liverpool have also put him on their wish-list, although Christian Benteke and Danny Ings are their preferred options.

QPR are determined not to sell Austin on the cheap if he decides to reject a new contract, with his current deal expiring next year.

They value the 25-year-old at around £15million and feel that Lambert can be a cut-price replacement.

Lambert started just 11 games for Liverpool this season following a £4m switch from Southampton and has been put up for sale.

While the 33-year-old failed to make an impression at Anfield, his record at Southampton was impressive with 117 goals in 235 appearances.

He has also earned 11 England caps but his struggles in a Liverpool shirt mean he could be sold for as little as £2.5m.

QPR believe his experience and ability to lead the line will be a major asset in the Championship after being relegated following just one season in the Premier League.

We definitely need to get an experienced striker in, and at 2.5 million, he could well fit the bill. He knows where the goal is for sure, has top level experience, and would lead the line well, supported by quick midfielders and a canny partner up front.

That's just one of our key requirements, however. We will NEED a goalkeeper, because we're bound to lose at least one of Green and McCarthy. We need defenders - someone experienced and not too old to fill in at centre back in place of Ferdinand / Caulker. We need some swift full-backs and wingers, with good engines to get up and down the line and the ability to cross the ball. We need a midfield general - possibly Barton if he stays - to ensure we never lose that battle.

There's a lot of work to do, but getting a reliable striker in is a part of the jigsaw, that's for sure.

Lambert could turn out to be a genious piece of business. A two year deal makes for very low risk and possibly big reward. But only if Charlie leaves though.

You may be kidding but he definitely does not fit the bill for me. QPR and the championship would be a come down for the guy and his last paycheck. Exactly what we should be trying to avoid.

    What would be his motivation?

Wasn't up to the Premiership and will not play for England again. What has he got to play for except the money?

The price tag is not as important as the wages, they need to be low to confirm his status as the right sort. Stepping down from Liverpool would be tricky

Haven't we been down this route before? Over the hill players joining us for a final payday. Young and hungry has got to be the way to go. Don't want the ageing beetroot jar botherer anywhere near Loftus Road

I think putting Lambert in the same category as previous mercenaries we have signed is a little harsh. Lambert, like Austin, worked his way up through the leagues. He has only been at one big club and it didn't work out for him. I don't think he's ever been the sort to seek out a huge pay day and has always seemed a loyal type.

I would have thought, after the year he has had, he'd be happy to be playing regular football again.

Really? Then how come he scored 28 PL goals for Saints?

Can't see why he'd drop down a division though, having worked so hard to get to the prem.

Would imagine that he would be attractive to the newly promoted teams, and those existing Prem teams who may lose a striker this window....

This is the championship, we are talking about. Glenn Murray/Rickie Lambert/Peter Crouch would be absolutely perfect for us with RGC alongside them.
