Both incredible icons of cinema. A sad day.

 

Lee is probably playing Symphonic Heavy Metal up at the Pearly Gates.

Hopefully dressed as Dracula.

All mammoth icons in their own way and like all icons from our own era, no matter which era, you feel it as a part of you has gone as well. Songs or films or TV programmes or sporting personalities if you were interested in that person then that link has now gone. RIP all the guys thanks for the memories.

 

Who's June?

 

Chaps, let us not forget Marguerite Patten, Home Economics guru, Cookery writer and broadcaster. She died on the 4th June aged 99. She was co-opted by the war time government from the 'Eastern Gas Board' to help the nation 'make do and mend' with food during WWII! I interviewed her once for a local radio feature and she was then a sprightly 73 year old. Very old school but lovely to meet and talk to! She made some cherry scones for my visit and they were feckin' marvellous! Took three back on the train with me...

Not strictly this month, but as my first degree was in British & American Literature and I studied the works of the Bronte sisters in particular, I would like to give a shout out for Charlotte Bronte who died 150 years ago today!

 

I've still got a cookbook written by her that was a gift for my wedding.

Not from her, someone else bought us it.

Not from the war either, ya bastards.

Recipes are still bloody good to use in it.

Had good innings this bunch, sad to see them pass though, we don't seem to be producing such legends now.

 

The clue is in OLM'S post. "I thought we might as well have a monthly one."

 

Been a busy day today ffs.

Christopher Lee who actually died on sunday. Now Ron Moody and Ian McKechnie. A sad day.

All 3 legends in there own field.

I've also got one of Marguerite Patten's cookery books. It's something of a tradition that I always make the Christmas cake each year and I have been using Ms Patten's recipe from as far back as I remember. I always get compliments. Thank you Marguerite Patten - the first and probably the greatest ever "celebrity chef."

PS We've got a few Bronte books in the house too.

 

Christopher Lee scared the **** out of me when I was a kid. It was good that succeeding generations of kids "discovered" him too. Along with Boris Karloff, he was the ultimate horror icon. No doubt he will continue to haunt us for many more years to come.

 

Agreed. His films with the late great Peter Cushing are classics.
